I know with the Wadia they started with a CD-ROM, as a design platform, the brand doesn't really matter they are not going to redesign the wheel. The fact is off the shelf components from Sony, Teac and Phillips have been used since the 1st CD player just like the electronics in a VW is Bosch the same in a Audi, Porsche, Lamborghini, Bentley etc. After all a lazer diode is a cheap :2c: lazer diode and nothing more. It is how these components are tweaked. Take the VRDS clamping system from Wadia and Esoteric made by Teac as an example. Further to that I would feel much better having a Sony laser as a component in my CD player than some specialised transport manufacturer having a go at making their own. Same reason as to why I would prefer having a Mercedes AMG engine in my Pagani than Horachio Pagani having a go at making his first engine.
