There are smaller towns in SA where the quality of life is much better than that in the cities Two that immediately come to mind are Stanford, not far from Hermanus and Montagu Both are well run by efficient municipalities, there is little crime, you are safe to walk about at night. As far as Stanford is concerned, there is quite a lot of culture, including a number of artisanal food producers who grow their own, a few good restaurants (quite expensive), cows and sheep nearby (and a couple of cheese makers) wild buck and lots of birdlife. Its a very doggy village, most everyone has at least one and they are out and about on walks all day. The sea is 20 minutes in either direction. Hermanus (which is having some problems) is 25 minutes away and has most everything one could need including hospital, plenty of doctors, dentists etc. My friend hardly ever leaves the place, it is so green and peaceful. In Montagu you are surrounded by fruit farms, the Breede River wine region is close by. One fellow I met who now lives there is Lemme Davids, who ran an audio shop in Jhb. He and my brother in law have started a film and music society and have weekly shows in a large empty room in the KWV museum. He (brother in law) also makes his own wine and I still have several bottles left from the 2017 vintage. There is a decent hospital in the town Stanford is about an hour from Cape Town, Montagu about 2.5 hours. You have the choice of going via Worcester and the tunnell, or Villiersdorp and Franschhoek
