All the cable changes I've made in the past couple of years (and past couple of systems) have ALL brought substantial improvement. In my previous system the interconnects provided a cleaner signal, and the speakers cable improved LF extension and allowed the system to be played at a louder volume without it becoming harsh sounding. I still own the said cables on my bedroom system. On my latest hifi the cables made ASTONISHING differences, all of it in bringing the system closer to neutrality. My current set of cables allows the WHOLE system to step out of the way of the music, very high standards of neutrality. Yes, the same CD, pre-amp, amp and speakers, just with better cables, sound much better. The cables did not improve the components, but the previous cables (Some already good stuff) managed to compromise the performance of the components and all in all, the musical portrayal. Its all relative, as Joel said, to what the system is worth. But I believe any system deserves at least the 10% rule as most magazines promote (Spent 10% of system cost on cables). Even if that means spending R50k on a R500k system, as some of the guys I know/heard of have done with great results.
