What has also helped me personally, big time, is my headphone rig : Pathos Aurium HP amp and Audeze LCD II headphones. They serve their purpose, are superceded by newer and better offerings by Audeze, there are other brands that equal and are even better. I can only dream of what they offer musically. I still own musical Fidelity X- Can V3 amp and both Sennheiser 600 and 650 headphones. These do not give me what the Pathos and Audeze give me. The Audeze/ Pathos combination brings me much closer, even better in some areas, minus the room acoustic additions/ subtractions, and just to focus on what we are missing when listening at lower versus higher levels, is clear to hear. PRAT, transient speed, resolving power, impactfuness, micro details, dynamics, transparency, etc, are better resolved. This highlights how much is ‘missing’ at lower in room volume levels. Please, do not get wrong : there is nothing wrong with listening at low playback levels. Try, at least to listen do a decent amplifier/ headphone rig, to your favourite music, maybe, you could ‘see’ what you are possibly missing out on. Or it could help you, like it did me, to try and focus on what I could address/ improve in my main listening room system.
