be careful of wrapping iron around a transformer it can create a shorted turn which will burn the transformer out. I have never heard of heating being an issue in output transformers. The nature of music is such that the ratio of average to peak sounds is usually quite large so 20W transformer producing 20W of music is really only producing 2-5W continuous power. If it did produce 20W continuous you wouldn't be hearing anything that resembled music unless of course you are listening to a sine wave. The usual failure mode for output transformers is the windings failing through overvoltage caused by inductive flybacks (heavy class B clipping and overdrive) or some sort of short that forces too much DC through the windings. Power transformers do operate with sine waves and can heat up quite a bit depending on the circuit and conditions but is it really an issue? I had a Dynaco SCA35 the power transformer is squashed into a small enclosure flanked closely on either side by the output transformers, it got massively hot in operation. I re-purposed all the trannies into a build i did, the power transformer still gets untouchably hot even though it has a lot more space to breathe now....but it's been doing that for over 50 years now so I doubt any failure is imminent! Dynaco was known for building to price and thus probably used the least amount of iron necessary for their transformers. The performance of their transformers is very good and they are not known for failures. The triode electronics transformers probably do run cooler but it might be a case of solving a problem that does not really exist?
