I would love to see a locally built CD/DVD transport! What would be great is if someone could build a really decent player that could play both DVD's and CD's without the loss in quality in CD play back that you normally find in DVD players. Surely this is possible? Another point to consider perhaps is the whole sliding tray approach which invariably is the 1st thing to break. My Electrocompaniet CD1 CD player approaches the problem from the same point of view as a vinyl turntable ie they dispense with the whole sliding tray problem by allowing the user to simply place the CD onto the spindle from the top. This approach is much simpler, far less prone to failure of some tiny little part in a complex system of servo motors etc. Apparently they put a lot of effort in to mechanically isolating the spindle, similar to turntable design. It sounds great so they did something right! Balanced outputs would be nice as well!
