[QUOTE="croak, post: 9678, member: 361"] There are huge sonic differences between phono stages of different levels. Some may indeed not add up to a lot of component count, the old limited market, more return per product needed, box takes a lot of cost etc scenario. IMO they are every bit as important as the pre and main amplifier if not more so having more gain, EQ and more susceptibility to noise and magnetic fields etc. It occupies a sad segment in the current vinyl market, only qualifying for the last few shekels in the budget most of the time, like speaker stands. People are ever happy to spend on decks and expensive cartridges of which they hardly get the benefit using nasty phono pre amps. Especially low output MC played in to a budget phono stage. The baby is thrown out with the bathwater as gain is typically insufficent, loading options or adjustment are non existent and noise levels to high, gain too low. Hence for many I believe high output MC is a beter way to go and gets you better performance. The new HOMC carts will give low outs a good run for their cash. Once the phono pre is bespoke, the merit of low output MC come to the fore properly. R3K LOMC cart with R2K phono pre is a disaster IMO, try a 3K HOMC with it rather set to MM gain. Another example woud be to rather use a R1k MM cart in to a good R2K or so phono pre then an R2K cart in to a R1K phono pre. Please note guys, I am talking about what is out there on the market, not what could be built for X budget etc. R1K phono pre amps would struggle to add up to more then R75.00 worth of components excl case.
