A fellow audiophile was in the habit of playing his music loud whenever he called on me to listen to (crit) his system. I always found the need to turn it down to more comfortable levels. When listening critically I find that most systems have an SPL sweet spot, and exceeding the system limits usually reduces enjoyability. Rodney Gold's final system had the unusual ability to play so clean and loud that you would not notice how very loud it was (no overload/distortion/compression cues present). That does not mean that one should listen that loud, but was a good indicator that the system had exceptional dynamic range and headroom to spare.
