It had 2% distortion, as per the manual (!), and it audibly hissed when music was not playing, but it had awesome bass (I am a basshead), and it could play loud (I love playing loud, concert levels or better). I LOVED that thing. Even took it with to varsity (and managed to crack a window in a double room I was sharing). So, to my way of thinking, find out what tweaks your buttons, what makes you enjoy listening to music, and find a system that excels in those areas. That is also where a good dealer comes into play.
I'd say no.1: Find what tweaks your buttons in music, and find a system that excels in those areas. I have had intense musical experiences with my dad's old Pioneer receiver and speakers.
