How bad or good can a vintage amplifier be?

There is this ongoing opinion that vintage amplifiers have an "aged" and or dated sound.

But you have to remember that any amplifier designer will do their best to create a unit with excellent specifications (within a certain budget of course).

Some amplifiers from the past sound great. But how do they measure? I put a Pioneer SA-708 to the test on the Audio Precision.
