Isn't that the same as 'passthrough' setting on a media player? And isn't the 'Direct' setting on an AVR merely an absence of digitally processing the audio signal other than converting to an analogue signal? I have in the meantime established that there is a fault on the one media player box (brand is called Stylus) in that it does not process 6 channels in spite of sending out 6 channel signal to the AVR. And on the Mede8er box, I changed output settings and it is now playing all six FLAC channels. But, for what it is worth, playing music in six channel, surround sound requires a decently large room with well placed loudspeakers otherwise, in my experience, it is not worth the bother. In any event, I find that Dolby Surround sound (synthesized surround based on the ambience signals in normal stereo) is a better listening experience. A lot though depends on the stereo signal in the first instance.
