Sorry to hear about you Vivid demo. I had a demo of the original G1 a few years ago that was available used (demo was at a CPT based dealer), it sounded awful, so I stood up and did a walk about to the back of the system just to discover that the one speaker was hooked up out of phase. That said, I've only had good experience dealing with the Vivid factory. If you want to listen to the Vivids running off pre and power amps, you are welcome to pop over for a listen. I have a the Giya G2 driven by a Mola Mola Tambaqui DAC/pre with Kaluga mono blocks. I'm in Durbanville. The Vivid speakers are neutral and will portray the character of the electronics - I have heard the G1 Spirits driven by a VTL valve system and by Devialet mono-blocks and these were very very different results. None of the speakers you mentioned in your OP are what I would call "romantic" (Magico, Focal, Wilson, new B&W D4 range etc). Even the latest Sonus Faber speakers are no longer voiced to be soft and laid back. Maybe a move away from Class A / Class AB amps to valve amps (Audio Research, VTL, Macintosch) will give a sound signature that is closer to what you like.
