I wish I could answer this. How come that when I listen to a system it may initially sound bright/dull but quite pleasant after 3o minutes? Was it cold, needs to play in or did my ears adapt ? How come my stone deaf father in law prefers my Studer A80 tape recorder to my Mark Levinson finding the ML bright when the only difference is that the Studer is flat to 20kHz and the ML has a +2 db lift at 20k. His hearing aid sure as hell doesn't go that high, there is no music up there and both are flat at 16k! Same with the Studer A810 ; it has a 1 db dip at 4 kHz then picks up being totally flat elsewhere yet the ancient deaf one finds it dull. How come he could instantly and consistently pick up the audible differences amongst almost 20 different coupling caps? Excellent letter in the latest TAS on how one should never use test tones to evaluate hearing response. Unfortunately I discovered ENT is more about snot noses and tonsils than perfect hearing . On the same day I saw a bright shiny COBE heart -lung machine ,so my quest into discovering the intricacies of human hearing ended rather abruptly.
