PS3MediaServer is a piece of software that runs on your PC, and with your PS3 connected to your home network, allows you to play your shared media files. It does so by transcoding the files in real-time and even allows you to pass through the DTS stream to your receiver.
I agree with PearlJam; the laptop would do the same thing while running XBMC or Boxee. The cheapest I found the Mede8er was R1769 on Take2. I too was recently looking at getting a media player: either a Mede8er MED500X or a Popcorn Hour A-210. I eventually decided to get a PS3 instead (ironic, I know) and run PS3MediaServer. PS3MediaServer is a piece of software that runs on your PC, and with your PS3 connected to your home network, allows you to play your shared media files. It does so by transcoding the files in real-time and even allows you to pass through the DTS stream to your receiver. You out of luck with this option if you want to watch full HD video and you don't have a "fast-ish" PC. Plus this way you get to play games too :)
