DSTV Your volume is "fixed" error

How do I undo this so that I can use the DSTV remote to control the volume

This message appears when I try to use the DSTV remote to control the volume.

Using your DSTV remote:

Help > Settings > User Preferences > Video & Audio

then change the Audio Output setting from Fixed to Variable

Note that changing the setting means no more surround output, only stereo (if these DSTV boxes still operate as I remember).
