Do we really need amplifiers with 100watts per channel?
Here are my very subjective and not scientifically proven impressions: I used to use a Denon 3300 AV receiver, I think it was rated at 75 W X 5 channels. I then bought a second hand Arcam delta 290 and used this to drive the fronts. It was so much better despite similar power rating. Recently I bought a Yamaha 2600. This is supposedly much more powerful, I think 105W X 7 channels. This time I left the Arcam out for the following reasons: I wanted a uniform sound and thought that a mix of amplifiers would muddle the soundfield, the yamaha is higher rated than the Arcam for power, I use a 5.1 setup so the 2 spare channels on the yamaha are used to bi-amp the fronts. All in all this should be no contest, the yamaha should win hands down. However, a friend recently wanted to demo the system and I put on the lobby scene from the matrix and cranked up the yamaha (I don't normally give it a work out as we have little kids). Somehow I just found it all sounding muddy and had the impression that it used to be better with the Denon/Arcam setup. However, there has been a long gap between the comparisons and my memory might be failing me. Also there's the difference in processors and pre-amps (Denon vs Yamaha). Of course the answer is to add the Arcam to the Yamaha but it's such a pain - the speaker terminals are hell to work with on the Yamaha with thick cables. I need to try and press out the blockers to see if it will take banana plugs. But psychologically I still can't accept that the drop from 105W to 75W will IMPROVE the sound!
