Balanced or unbalanced? The Primare uses a opamp to convert unbalanced inputs to balanced. Not work? Have to try to know? Not enough gain? Amp input impedance vs pre output impedance problem? Not enough sparkle or flat sounding? No reason for it not to work. Maybe a digital source with high voltage gain/output can alter the combo. Can blame just pre/power combo. I use a parasound Halo A21 and although it has unbalanced inputs I avoid using them. Gain knobs set to full THX level and balanced from source and connected to a schiit Freya preamp with LISST / solid-state tubes and sometimes I prefer a passive Goldpoint SA1X balanced stepped attenuator. For extra midrange precense a pair of 6SN7 vacuum tubes give true tube sound. The Freya in passive or JFET mode however just has too little gain for any excitement. Although the Freya is quite versatile not all variations work in my setup, the same may be true for other pre/power combos. Maybe if my source voltage was a little beefier...
