15-20 years ago CD Wherehouse was fantastic and Look & Listen a distant 2nd. Today CD Wherehouse is more like CD Shithouse...no stock, no back catalogue etc. Look & Listen doesn't fare much better, the only exception I've stumbled on being their Fourways Crossing store...but it's also crap compared with what things were so many years ago and has definitely declined in the last 5 years or so in terms of depth and variety. Whilst its sad and frustrating, the same issue presents just about everywhere I've traveled in the world, its even difficult to find a decent store in NY &/or LA. If anyone knows of any here, in the UK or the US, please let me know. Ultimately whilst I don't think having Musica at the helm helps (as they generally stock current releases & greatest hits), I think its true to say that the day of the decent CD store is numbered, even here in SA. The proliferation of broadband coupled with mp3 and the move to digital audio has sealed their fate, even locally. Best back catalogue I've found is Amazon.com and their associated sellers.
