to be honest ive never ever experienced this issue - the only time ive had a problem with any form of audio over HDMI was when DSTV had the problem with lipsync errors over HDMI - but that was their fault cos prior to an update it worked perfectly and they caused the issue with the update im not too sure about that - IMHO room nodes (and antinodes) play a big role here and tuning multiple subs is more of a nightmare than having a single larger sub which will be far easier to tune correctly - it is difficult IMHO to get a pair of subs in differing room locations to sound consistently similar and to prevent issues - also theres the obvious problem if that they receive and play back an identical signal but are far apart you WILL create phase issues as well as time delay issues so you need subs capable of adjusting for that as well as measurement equipment to adjust and also enough adjustment capability within the sub ie EQ, time delay, phase adjustment etc, etc, etc so its not as simple as just using two subs in differing locations even if the room seems perfectly symmetrical - two subs will definitely react differently within a room even if you measure their locations to the millimetre (experienced this recently with a pair of velodyne DD10's which have a lot more adjustment capabilities than most other subs you will find) i think to avoid issues the larger single sub is a preferable solution because its just easier instead of battling with "room acoustics" issues when it comes to placing a pair of subs in a room - just my 2c worth
