It's a transfer I made from a 1969/1970 cassette voice recording diary my parents made after the September 1969 Ceres earthquake. My dad had a business there at the time. The original tape (Philips C-120 nogal) was played into the DAT machine (at 48kHz) because I wanted to use studio-grade ADCs. My PC just has a bog standard motherboard audio chip which wouldn't have given me the best transfer quality. The Cassette deck was a Denon DN-790R dual-capstan unit which played the old tape perfectly! The cassette had no tape pressure pad anymore, but the Denon didn't care. It doesn't use them anyway. Fortunately, there was no sticky shed or anything like that. The tape was stored correctly since 1990 (teenage me understood the importance of keeping tape away from moisture and dust), fortunately, and the tape itself held up extremely well. I can talk more about the material on side B which is a recording of a 1971 radio documentary. I actually found and ordered a copy of the original broadcast 1/4" tape at the SABC archives! They are very helpful and professional. So now I had backups of the old cassette on DAT, but no way to transfer to CD entirely in the digital domain. You are all very kind with your offers of help. I have made contact with someone in Somerset-West and hope to find a solution soon.
