There is a lot of pressure on manufacturers to release products on time, so inevitably they sometimes screw up and release a dud from time to time. Usually these companies value their reputation and will go to trouble to rectify problems. In South Africa, many brands are represented by dealers that don't go the extra mile and therefore you are often stuck with a product that is backed by inferior after sales service. You really have to do your homework well here to find dealers that offer a good level of service of which there are a couple around. So often it helps to do a bit of homework and to give a bit of slack on the feature count to buy a better supported product. I've always had good experiences dealing with Yamaha products imported by Balanced Audio as well as HFX Systems, while I'd stay well clear of Audiotronic (for their abysmal treatment of Onkyo customers when they had their HDMI woes) and of course Mandarin Audio for the abysmal support of Audiolab products. Homemation is also a dealer I would also be hesitant to recommend due to their rotation of brands which can leave you high and dry. For example, they discontinued importing a brand of which I purchased a power amplifier and meant that even though I bought a product that under warranty I could no longer get support for the product. Fortunately the manufacturer came to my rescue and I managed to import spares directly, but I still had to pay for shipping which was quite expensive...
