Mike and Gert, It is a Rotel RCD-991 which is just great otherwise. Still plays fine on most cds, but starting to skip on some cds now when the player is cold and not warmed-up properly. I have cleaned and lubricated the cd rails already, but I suspect it to be early signs of possible laser failure. That said, the laser (Sony KSS-213B) is NOT expensive at all - approx 10USD new plus postage on Ebay. It can also be that I did not lubricate the rails properly and maybe a proper "lube" service of the laser rails will do the trick. Also, when the player has warmed-up properly, the skipping on some cds disappear. I agree with you Gert. In most cases it is NOT the laser. I bought a second hand Marantz cdp some time ago which skipped. A quick spray with Contact cleaner and some lube solved the problem. The player is still playing absolutely fine at my brother`s place and no more skipping at all.
