I have heard both, fleawatt powered stuff that sounds just gorgeous where the bigger efforts loose the beauty, then there is also a sense of effortless and a dynamic that needs to be experienced that one gets from quite high efficiency speakers and huge amplifiers. I heard a Cello rig once 96 dB speakers I think with 600 Watt RMS per "frequency band". Effortless, a sense of ease and lack of strain you never new was there. Dynamics? You do not know the meaning untill you hear something like this. An interesting exception / different concept is THE STEREO POWER AMPLIFIER (pronounced THEE) from Per Abrahamson (Electrocompaniet founder). He gives no power output spec but from measuring the voltage rails it is no more then 40W. From a powersupply size and physical size it could be 5 x that (even in class A). Pure class A and it sounds as big and effortless as anything else yet keeps that beauty of a wel designed nimble small amplifier.
