Backup *water* system do's and dont's

For the third time this year, we woke up to no water, with no clear indication when it may be resolved. With no sign of an end to loadshedding, pump run-time is insufficient to keep reservoir levels up, and the slightest disruption causes an outage. Add deficient and poorly-maintained infrastructure and we would be naive to think this will get better any time soon.

In the same way as a solar array, inverter and battery system make life livable during loadshedding, a basic backup water system (including rainwater harvesting) is becoming essential for normal life in SA. I am sure there are a bunch of experienced guys here that could guide the rest of us on what does and does not work w.r.t sizing, hardware selection, plumbing, costs, operating issues, etc.

Please share your wisdom ...
