At -60db Dialogue very difficult to hear, is it an Audyssey setting/issue? Or something else?
I use the Denon x4200w AVR. I can't compare the volume settings as the scales are different between the Denon and Marantz amps but -60db sounds way too low anyway. I also though struggle sometimes to hear dialogue clearly - dialogue clarity varies greatly from show to show and the background sounds coming from left and right channels are often normally louder than the dialogue on the center channel. So I compensate by raising center channel volume in the loudspeaker settings, quite a lot. I also ensure that the center channel loudspeaker is at ear height when seated or is pointing up towards the listening position if it is placed at a lower level. You can also lower the volume settings of each of the other channels so that the center channel volume becomes relatively louder. Audyssey adjusts all channels to a common value and it is quite legitimate to adjust the various channel volume settings to suit your own taste afterwards. Changing channel volumes does not impact the essential Audyssey adjustments to timing and frequency filter settings. Dynamic volume setting does not offer any real benefit in my experience. Its effect is to flatten the dynamic range between loudest and softest sounds and the resultant sound field sounds not right. You have been told the center channel does not work on stereo sources, but it will work when the quasi surround Dolby Surround effect is switched on. There is a separate center channel volume setting for this synthesized center channel, over and above the separate channel by channel loudspeaker volume adjustment settings. Lastly, I assume that all your loudspeaker settings except the subwoofer, of course, are set to small and the crossovers are all set to 80?
