Hmmm! It does not sound like these Maggies has been looked after and as such R5K is too much. Depending on what the bass panels look like, I would say max R2K. On my Maggies you have to take the feet off and then you will find the socks being stapled to the bottom of the speaker. You simply remove the staples and peel the sock off(towards the top) If you do get the opportunity to inspect the speakers in the nude, look at the back and run your fingers across the wires to feel if any of them have been delaminated(this is easily fixed by cleaning with acetone and sticking with Genkem or similiar) Also check for holes or tears in the Mylar membrane(the wires are stuck to this) and check for breakages in the wires. If there are any big tears in the Mylar, then I would suggest to stay clear of these speakers. Also check if there is a fuse at the back next to the crossover. This fuse is used to protect the tweeter and if it goes, there will be hardly any treble. Off course it is possible that the ribbon units are completely shot, in which case replacement is the only option. In the end you are the only one who can decide whether you should pursue this, but be carefull not to let your heart overrule your brain ;)
