The truth is that most of the functionality of the respective media players is built into the chip sets. The chip manufacturers move on in technology to keep up to date with the latest state of the art and to try to remain competitive. Chips become obsolete. The brands can't and do not maintain products interminably. The fact is that the technologies don't exist in-house, so at the end of the day all they can do is incorporate their selected chip onto a printed circuit board, with whatever small range of options is available (see Mi Box S vs Ematic where they essentially the same, but Mi has no ethernet port), design a special enclosure and customise a skin to give it a different user experience. There is a limit to what manufacturers can do to keep a product alive. The typical life cycle consists of releasing a product, issuing periodic updates while sorting out bugs (sometimes having to downgrade specs, even - promised performance not achievable), launching a new product and declaring the old one obsolete. Rinse and repeat.
