I'm going to have my nuts stood on here... Sorry Merv, Sorry George... The 38s is TERRIBLY overrated - I remember "testing" one of the first 38's (not the "S") version when they first landed... My old ARC LS1 (at the time), made it sound flat, anaemic and lacking in resolution... I was not very popular with the importers for expressing my disgust at the sound and was (politely) asked to keep quiet about it... Even the 380s (later on) still fell short of the mark. Yes, the 802 (in any of it's 4 forms) IS power hungry and WILL "tighten up" with more power/control, BUT of the 33* series Levinson amplifiers, the 331 was definitely the most "involving"! If you don't include the 33 or 33H... :) But then again, there's the story of a 331 up against a Maestro A160 (I think...) There again, the ML didn't live up to expectation. Personally, I like the 331 (actually had one for a few months). If you don't have a large room, or feel the need to approach "realistic" listening levels - it's still a pretty good amp! I know of quite a few (other than Merv and George) ML/B&W owners who, after getting rid of the 38(something) pre (and a few other things... PM me for details) have returned to Nirvana with a good Valve preamp...
