I'll be hitting the same dilemma next year april when the house is done. My current idea for my setup is to have a NAS box (maybe with a DLNA server) sitting in the computer room (aka study). This will be the media server. For my main entertainment room i'll be building a HTPC with XBMC. My reasons are plainly that I love XBMC on my XBox1, and its still being actively developed and improved. I can build HTPC with GBps network and CPU capable of streaming/decoding 1080p and be confident that most formats will be handled. It won't be cheaper by any means. I really nice HTPC Antec case alone is R1600. But I believe that it will offer me the best way to navigate my AV library or at least be customizable enough to allow me to navigate the way I want to. The current crop of media players (popcorn hour/mediater/wd live) are interesting as well and I will investigate closer to the time. Sorry don't have any solid advice for you except that either HTPC or standalone media player. DONT go converting your movies for the Netgear.
