Had a small bit of fun this morning, listening to the Meridian preamp/Delta Sigma dac, Meridian 750hm digital cables to Meridian 500 transport and from my Juli@ soundcard/JRiver, connected to the Modwright Instruments KWA 100 power amp (van den Hul Orchid balanced interconnect). Swopping between the two sources, using the cd below and the FLAC file, you can hear the difference (s) between the two sources, playing the same songs simultaneously. CD trumps the digital in fullness, sounding closer to a good turntable in it’s ‘organicness’, fonder, less digital, a smidgen less brighter and less louder. Tonal and timbal color’s easier to differentiate. The soundcard, no slouch either, presents the the music a little brighter and a little louder, you can hear the number crunching is digital, we are speaking nuances here, some will possibly hear very little to difference, at all. Then, R2R ladder just blows the above right out the water, even with the lowly Denafrips Aries II Dac in this system. More spacial cues and image specificity, more enhanced soundstage and, where it matters most, a much better tonal and timbal presentation, among other easily identifiable traits. Will shortly be putting my “old system” back together again, with My Pathos valve stage pre in the mix. I think I am done with Delta Sigma and a complete solid state system.
