    Identify a Philips radio

Some of those Philips receivers of that vintage and earlier had very complicated dial cord setups and were a nightmare to work on. Even had some of the dial workings attached to the wooden or Bakelite case and had to be mechanically connected after the chassis was reinstalled. So damm...

    Gas vs. Induction Hobs

I personally prefer induction cooking, many years back had a gas stove in my flat in Hillbrow, and I found it to be fiddly in general, wheras a modern induction cooking plate (mine at least) can be set to cook for a specific period and then switch off. Control of temperature range also very...

Mods would you kindly lock this one for me.

    Looking for a 6KM8 valve

Trying to get A 6KM8 valve which is a sharp cut off triple anode tetrode used for audio frequency division and possibly audio mixing, cannot find if there is a UK ot European equivalent.

    Russia-Ukraine Conflict

All of this is very sad, and as to how we all will be affected in the future is unknown. So far my Yandex search engine and email continues to operate normally, well it was a few hours ago when I last checked.

Internet Radio Stations - Who else listens to them?

Unfortunately my World Space doesn't have the FM receiver so is dead junk at present Yes memories, just to think of my first venture into radio (crystal receiver) was constructed a few years before the transistor was invented! The excitement of first signal received that night after finding the...

Internet Radio Stations - Who else listens to them?

Yes I listen to them most days  via Radio Garden, prior to the internet facility I was listening to the now defunct World Space satellite signal which gave me virtual FM quality from a multitude of stations from all around the world. Radio Canada International sadly now gone, Radio Netherlands...

    Wine Jelly

Yes shonver, There is a bit of a loss of the alcohol content but not too bad, cut the heat as soon as sugar and gelatine is fully dissolved. Have better control of heat on induction plate, gas would most likely also give good control to avoid boiling off too much of the alcohol

    Wine Jelly

Found a recipe in old late 1800's publication a while back and decided to give it a try as my  contribution to my family Christmas get together. The original article read To make wine jellies such as claret, sherry or port wine use 1oz gelatine to one bottle of cheap wine and three quarter lb...

    ECL82 valves for Sansui 220

As an additional note to my suggestion that a tripler be used for the 16 volt heaters of the PCL82 valves there is another way they can be powered, a method I have used previously in restoration of older valve radios which were known as the All American 5 that were transformerless operating...

    ECL82 valves for Sansui 220

Use a tripler circuit and experiment around with the value of the electrolytics until you get the correct voltage across the heaters and you may end up with a low value resistor in series with the heaters. Trial and error to get it spot on.

The 11 greatest vacuum tubes you've never heard of

Unfortunately my archives on these valves did not include the continuation on page number 205,    I do however additional information that dates from a later date and includes data from a valve characteristic book listing the various types Loewe manufactured at the time.

Mars, thanks for the tip hope I can get it correct. Solve a lot of my hassles

    The E80L valve

Quite correct  Charles with the slightly higher anode dissipation of 9 Watts running at a voltage of 250. I based on the figures I used  a voltage of 200 as reflected in data books I have from Mullard, Pope and Philips. When I used one I ran it at a HT of just about 200 volts and had a maximum...

The 11 greatest vacuum tubes you've never heard of

Hi Eric, No I haven't used any of them, but packed away I have a radio using those valves, unfortunately I cannot seem to be able to post photos on this forum.

The 11 greatest vacuum tubes you've never heard of

One interesting valve not mentioned, and now almost 100 years old can be considered the world's first integrated circuit,  there were a few variations made by Loewe in Germany. They were a complete radio in one glass envelope which included up to three individual valves together with resistors...

    ECL82 valves for Sansui 220

A nice tuner amplifier I have 2 of them, over the years one particular fault I have come across a few times, (not implying it is a common fault) is the failure of the wire wound resistor mounted above the chassis. As it is now about 60 years old most of the coupling and bypass capacitors will...

    The E80L valve

This is an enquiry to see if any forum members have made use of this very useful valve in either normal single ended pentode or wired as a triode. Same size as the EL84 but with different pinouts and anode dissipation of 8W.compared to the EL84 which is 12W. A pair of them will put out just over...

What made you choose valves over solid state ?

Came across this which pretty well covers the advantages of valves over solidstate Highly linear without negative feedback, especially some small signal valves Tolerant of overloads and voltage spikes. Characteristics highly independent of temperature, greatly simplifying biasing. Wider...
