Good (but not stunning) Giya and Devialet demo at Twelve Apostles Hotel

Invitations to our little show were published both on line and in AVSA magazine. We had really fantastic attendance, 53 guests I think, and about 57 RSVP's. All in all, the response was great and shows that the high end scene is alive and well in Cape Town. There is a plan to demonstrate in...

Vivid Audio/Devialet Demo at 12 Apostles

I've written a bit on the evening at the above post too.

Good (but not stunning) Giya and Devialet demo at Twelve Apostles Hotel

For interest and to answer the queries from the above posts: The large system consisted of four Devialet D-premiers each in bridged monaural mode outputting 500W. Each G1 was fed the signal from 1 D-premier into the LF section and HMF section separately, (the GIYA is bi-wireable). There was no...

    AVSA Atlas Mavros Review

I use them with my Giyas, they are certainly good value for money, even at their frankly stratospheric price.

    Apple Samsung rivalry

What I really want to know is why Apple people develop this endless smugness about them. They completely lose the ability to be objective and rational. I use 3 computers, a Vista C2D, Windows 7 i7 and a MAC with Lion on it. The biggest differences are that the Apple is DIFFERENT. Not better...

    Directional speaker cables

If you shorten the cable you must be careful. Use a cup to catch any oil that drips out then put the terminal on that end. Take the other terminal off the opposite end and pour it back in from that side. Otherwise the electrons will not be able to swim because the current will be flowing the...

A Question on speaker power requirements.

Agree, completely. The concept of "power handling" is also frequently mixed up with "power output". PMPO - remember that??? I had a quick look at my speakers specs, quoted at "800Watts, music program". This at least clears up under what conditions the power handling determination was made...

ROTEL POWER AMP TO DRIVE B&W 803D

Room 9 x 6 x 2.5m, around 100dB averaged. Peaks of 110, 115dB. Now. Before K1, softer. Thermal compression was apparent in 802's which naturally limited my exuberance. Also 802's excited room modes more (deeper bass extension than K1) so the room felt quite over-driven at times.

    How much is too much

Chatting to Laurence Dickie the other day, he reckons that Dartzeel is plenty go, to go with the show. He was seriously impressed and not much impresses him...

ROTEL POWER AMP TO DRIVE B&W 803D

No lies - I like my music loud at times, and for prolonged periods. 2 x Halcro DM88 - no clipping, for sure. When you overload the Halcros they just shut off. No, the FST drivers are definitely wanting in the power handling department. Replaced them with Vivid K1's and can play much louder now...

ROTEL POWER AMP TO DRIVE B&W 803D

Chuffing is the noise made by the non-laminar flow of air in badly designed ports... Amp's cannot cause chuffing however, elimination of other noises might have drawn attention to the chuffing?

ROTEL POWER AMP TO DRIVE B&W 803D

The car analogy can be useful: 2.0 litre 4 cylinder 170 kW 310Nm torque with hot cams etc. 3 litre 6 cylinder naturally aspirated 170 kW 290Nm torque On paper the 1.8 litre has the 3 litre beat, but when you drive them the story is quite different. The effort required to extract a turn of...

ROTEL POWER AMP TO DRIVE B&W 803D

A pile of blown FST drivers (six) says don't push 800 series B&W's too hard... 350W into 802D's... Thermal overload on the voice coils in each case. :walled:

The singing flame Ion powered speaker

It's almost the holy grail, a massless pulsating sphere capable of infinite acceleration and deceleration. Pity they had to stick it in a honky horn...

    How much is too much

I have it on good authority that they do actually sound pretty special... Haven't heard em meself though. Mate went to the Hong Kong Hi Fi show and they were on demo. Running of battery packs too.
