    DC lighting

I am looking at replacing the lighting in my house and thought whether one could use LED strip lights to good effect? I am thinking of laying a 24/48V dc bus in the house roof for all manner of uses in conduit. Any experience with LED lighting and the requisite ali extrusions and polycarbonate...

Belated happy new year to all. Finally starting to get back to some DIY. I am looking to restore some vintage speakers and wonder whether one can find grill cloth locally that is suitable for a late 60s-70s type speaker cabinets/guitar cabs?

Willingness of forum members to take advantage...

<rant> Yesterday another person booked an acoustic consult which i occasionally offer for silly rates to forum enthusiasts ...basically covers the hire of a calibrated mic calibrator and/or instrument so that any noise study I perform is respectable. Arrange to firm up the day before.... and...

So let's build a 2D prime root difuser

All this talk of diffusors has had me scratching my head and looking at my ceiling.... So I decided to build some at 30mm pitch with end up measuring 1.2m x 0.780m at a full 190mm deep. I'll share some pics a little bit later, but the first heard impression is that it works well.

Tribute Piece to Jeff Bagby in the Washington Post

Having used his spreadsheets from FRD group days and enjoyed his writing since bass list and rec.audio it is always interesting to discover the man behind the name. Sad it has to be in a tribute. Few People have shared as much passion and taught so many in the art of acoustic design of hifi...

    Eminence agent

Hi all Anyone have a working contact number for the current Eminence Agent? It's currently listed as Metro Systems but the listed mobile number hangs up and their land-line is mis-listed on their website. Also their contact form bombs out. Current flavour of the month Eminence distributor things.

What might be the most insane fixed install sub woofer in the country

It's been a long time since I last posted much on these shores. Life has just drifted away from this forum. Anyways, one day someone phoned me up being referred to me for building custom speakers and that he had some very specific requirements. After delving somewhat deeper it turns out what...

    Sources of enameled copper wire

I've built a new coil winder and controller set and want to get going with some smaller coils. Where can one get smaller spools of wire diameters less than 2-5kg or in the case of diameters above  0.5-0.6 now in 10-15kg spools from Wirelec? Nouwens, I know you read here under various sock...

    Sometimes you get lucky

And get to kill a few difficult to treat modes with a few panels taken to a site for "just quickly test" and reduce the energy in half the modes a bit. Determining where and how is half the work. Unfortunately the after measurement had some noise that I only picked up too late.

Value woofers for a small project

With DIY around the corner and with a small flea market proposed for this year I thought to whip up the quick FAST I had in mind last year. With infinity dynamic no longer producing drivers there seems to be a bit of a gap in the market. For example I am currently looking for something to mate...

Hi All Who can refer a quality anodizing shop in Gauteng? Horror stories abound and I don't want something blotchy. I need 12 pieces anodized and dyed for terminal rear plates.

    Cables that make a difference

Now most folks here know that I don't give all that much attention to cable preferring to focus my energy on the acoustics and loudspeaker side of things...However with a PC there is a very particular thing I want to draw your attention to: the cheap and nasty stereo mini-jack to RCA cables...

Anyone going to the Munich High End Show?

Should be fun, even if the hotel suites and masses of people don't offer much in the way of listening evaluation. Rumour has it an Oom is present there this year.

    AV Arts / RS4

Anyone looking to buy a Projector would be well advised to consider  AV Arts (Josh, RS4 on this forum). He was recommended by other members of this forum and rightly so: he provides a service like no other. It is rare to find people who give such honest advice and be so friendly at that. I...

Lightning took out PC, how long does insurance take to replace

So yesterday our house took a near direct strike, tripping the power (oddly only one earth leakage though). We saw the storm coming and unplugged the DSL router and our PCs and network connections. My wife got clever and yanked out the multi-plug, I just plugged out the IEC cord on the box and...

Coil winder build, looking for bobbins

So I have lost two winders, one to theft and another is indisposed indefinitely with the responsible person unaccountable for months now. As they say no good deed goes unpunished. Time to build another. Does anyone know of suitable bobbins for winding inductors? It's a pity (and work) to cut...

Power tripping in unison with the house across the street

The house across the street has had lots of tripping the last few months, for what reason is not known. Ever since the property across our street dug up cables to their feed box outside their property I've had some random trips on both my earth leakages. Is it possible that electrical work...
