Bit rot is real...check your tunes

I'm running Freenas (ZFG) on a HP Microserver with 16Gb ECC RAM. It has been rock stable for years. It is housed in a side cupboard with ventilated doors that I built for it, running from a UPS with bigger batteries.

Thank you kind sir. Unfortunately a couple of weeks after taking the pic, I spilled beer over the nice Keyboard (the Alu one in the pic) and now I'm sitting with a black mechanical keyboard, kinda breaking the looks of the setup.  :walled:

Internet speed required for 4k streaming

@Naushaad I'm just hoping that you not choose a line speed that would have been too closely matched to the minimum specs of a service like Netflix. With any household internet installation, it will be used for more than just Netflix and light browsing because you have devices like mobile...

Internet speed required for 4k streaming

@Dolby, what would your recommendation be to Naushaad?

Internet speed required for 4k streaming

@ScottulusMaximus it depends on the game: https://www.gamespot.com/.../how-much-bandwidth-do-online-games-use-26869110/ That is an article from 2009, since then games have gotten bigger, needing more resources especially if it has community skins for items and such.

Internet speed required for 4k streaming

Hi Dolby. You are quite right, if the question here has to do with latency issues and/or diagnosing problems with a line. The original post has to with line speed and 4k streaming. Please lets keep it on topic. If you utilize the line 100% then packets will be dropped, latency sensitive...

    Kwese TV

ChrisC, sounds like a solid installation so far. If you want to, download ping plotter (Windows app that's free) and ping the Netflix/showmax IP. It will plot the traffic on a graph and can be very useful to diagnose network problems.

Internet speed required for 4k streaming

It depends, will the line be used for anything else or just exclusively for watching 4k streaming? Reason why I ask is that if you want to use the line for lets say VOIP or gaming, you will have to double or triple the speed. latency sensitive applications need the extra headroom.

Disaster recovery for daily main drive

There is a couple of data recovery companies across SA. They can charge anything from R2k-R5k. If you want to try it yourself, UBCD has some recovery tools. If you used Bitlocker on the drive, you will need to give the recovery company the recovery code.

    LTE service provider recommendations

I would try all options by getting an external antenna, then testing each available provider. You might find that the closest cell tower might have the strongest signal, but if everyone else is eating up the bandwidth, the second closest tower (If not too far away) that is less used might be a...

Force applications to use a specific internet connection

You can load a free firewall like PFSense and direct traffic out with rules.

    Kwese TV

Sorry to hear ChrisC. Stable wireless does not really translate into a stable connection. Wireless technology in itself has so many factors that can influence the speed. For instance: distance signal strength Channels Frequency antennae Amount of people that share same tower, and how much...
