    Which Cassette Tape?

Hi Gerd, my apologies. PM is Private/Personal Mail. DM is direct mail. Thanks a bunch for your number. I'll connect accordingly when I find something good. Re the below matter of import duty. Blank cassettes have been duty free for years but 15% VAT on invoice value will apply.

    Which Cassette Tape?

Hi Gerd, it might be tricky getting fresh cassettes in SA, but they are available overseas. Hitachi-Maxell still make the Maxell UR and excellent results are possible with those. Despite the various high prices to be seen on FleaBay and Yahoo Japan, there are deals to be had. You can literally...

Which amplifier will you keep for life????

Agreed. Mine is seriously cherished. But all the others are staying too. They were all carefully auditioned and purchased, usually new. So, add Pioneer A300R, TEAC RV30, Pioneer SX300 (perfect retro and also a receiver), Harman-Kardon HK1400, Sony TA-F450D, WRS SA60 and for HT a Yamaha RV-390.

    What are you reading?

Superb!! He's a splendid guy and an outstanding actor. Naturally he'd want something of quality and even better if it has the halo value of having been previously owned by a fellow South African.

I am simply going mad QUEEN Cr O2 or Metal

The bass and treble responses on type II and IV while clearly audible are not really a mmajor consideration  in properly done recordings.  But what you say is true in terms of recording level sensitivity.  The MOL and SAT levels of Metals is higher in general than all tapes with the exception of...

Aiwa XK-009 Excelia Wooden sides + screw specs

Congratulations - fresh rubber all round.  And those two bulbous transformers are pretty impressive.  You have a very serious deck that will give you years of joy, not to mention, pride. Cheers - Marc

What to look for in a cassette deck ?

Thenoiseguy and Steerpike all made valid points. Cassette recording can be incredibly absorbing and just sheer fun when you get into it. But R600 was and is a tall order for a 3 head dual cap deck. SA never was a very discerning market for decks or tape from the way I saw it. I have gathered a...

    Sansui AU-999 Restoration

Thank you Gareth.  That's quite some heft!!  I also agree with Marantz123 on a pair of Sansui's sensational SPs from the late 70s, with magnificent walnut veneers and fretwork grilles.  Anything fro the SP2500 upwards.. if you can find a pair of SP3500s, they are sublime.  High efficiency, from...

    Casette deck service. Pretoria

Try Hans Lemmerer - he advertises his services on Gumtree.  I'll see if I can get his number.  He's not in PTA - more like JHB - North Riding I think. But well worth the drive for his competence.  Check with him on the phone if he has the schematics for your machine and if not, download and...

    Carpenters

Gerhard, I was just looking for this and it's quite likely that the search criteria (keying mainly off the title) may have related to the cassette deck itself and it just happened to be playing that very evocative song by The Carpenters.  It's just something that crossed my mind, I may well be...

What's on the tape? Now Playing

I love your TASCAM 122/Mk 2.  Beautiful.  My 112 had an excellent service from Hans Lemmerer a couple of years ago.  Not something to let go of, that's for sure. Marc

    Supersonic One-Eleven

What an absolute delight finding one of these, the rather worthy Supersonic One-Eleven stereo "systems"  They were in fact made in-to in Bulawayo.  This model was the predecessor to the "made under licence" by Supersonic "Pioneer Blue Orchid" - which was quite similar in looks, had very similar...

Last stock...push up the price ?

Right, I do think that the computer hardware scene are probably the ones I notice the most - when the Rand is stronger and is buting more stock than it was 2 months ago, they drop prices.  I think it's partly to stay competitive, but more because they need to off-load sensitive items like mother...

Analog Tape Recording vs. Direct to Digital Shootout

Digital origination of high quality is easy, (comparatively) affordable and convenient, even for the sound engineers. But if you, as an artist or investor want the absolute, no expense spared solution that will offer unlimited "forward compatibility" to codecs not yet even invented or available...
