5 albums you think everyone should hear at least once in their life

Just noticed this thread now - some excellent mentions already and there are quite a few unknown to me that I will be investigating. Here are 5 that I think have not been mentioned and they all made me stop and pay close attention when I first heard them: Love - Forever Changes Batsumi -...

    RIP

Just saw this now. RIP Daniel Johnston. Wrote some tremendous, moving songs. The movie "The Devil and Daniel Johnston" is also worth a watch.

    RIP

RIP Dr Tabane. In 1988 I ignored a cold and went to see him perform at the Base in Cape Town for the first time. I had to go back the next night too! Utterly unique.

    RIP

RIP Jaki Liebezeit, the great drummer for Can. Also Maggie Roche of the Roches. Will be playing The Roches and then start with side two of Can's "Ege Bamyasi" - "Vitamin C" (perfection).

    going full Prog

+1. I also only have this one, but it's good. Also check out Family - Music From a Doll's House: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5cTp5xwAl58

    going full Prog

Will look out for Rock in Opposition stuff, thanks. Sorry to tell you this, but at the last Cape Town vinyl fair at Wynberg primary school I found both In Praise of Learning and Legend. They were a little overpriced for the condition they were in, but as I'd lived so many years without ever...

    going full Prog

Gong possibly also fits the lesser-known tag: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u0AhjPHGbLU Hawkwind's first album's wonderful. And for something a bit different, Henry Cow with Dagmar Krause: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Fd_7unOj4A

    going full Prog

I used to enjoy prog quite a lot and still have a soft spot for some of it. A friend of mine more so, and I recall some of his more obscure (to me) things included: Egg: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oxnU-cNyvx0 Gracious!: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QnLbB1MvKVc Hatfield and the North...

    Matsuli Music reissues

The Matsuli releases are fantastic. I recorded a friend's copy of the first Batsumi album back in the 1980s and kept looking for a copy for myself and not finding one anywhere. Matsuli bringing it out was like winning the lottery. They did a wonderful job. I have both Batsumi albums, the Dick...

    jim neversink

Have just discovered him this week from the track "Bitterbessie Dagbreek" that he contributes to the Ingrid Jonker tribute lp "Die Kind is nog Jonger". I'll definitely be listening to more of his work, thanks for the reviews. More info about the Jonker tribute here...

    Kosmische Musik

^^^ Wow Kosmiche! I'd never heard of Sand until today, thanks. How about a bit of Popol Vuh - Engel der Gegenwart (from the Werner Herzog movie "Heart of Glass") https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lMSyLA6p6mQ

    Kosmische Musik

Mother Sky is a monster! Funny story: My introduction to Can was a double lp collection (The Classic German Rock Scene) - 1 side from Monster Movie, 1 from Soundtracks (She brings the Rain and Mother Sky), 1 from Tago Mago and 1 from Ege Bamyasi. It struck me that while the music on side 2 was...

    Kosmische Musik

It seems the kosmische music is not too popular hereabouts, so I'll suggest another. Here's Michael Rother again - with his group Neu! and "Hero". https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7-ihFss88VU

    Kosmische Musik

Here's a favourite of mine that may not be too well known: Michael Rother - Flammende Herzen https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XEhbTTv_I7E

Tangerine Dream - who knows & likes?

JonnyP has summed it up pretty well. I really regret getting rid of my vinyl copy of Zeit all those years ago - those droning cellos are fantastic! Also +1 for Klaus Schulze's Irrlicht and Popol Vuh (for a taste, see the start of Werner Herzog's Aguirre, the Wrath of God...

    Whats on the TT...

Nice! I think if I were forced to choose my "all-time favourite song" it would have to be Vitamin C.

    Dilema

I have one album like that. I bought Thin Lizzy's Fighting without a cover (also water damaged) because the vinyl was in good condition, it was cheap and I was feeling nostalgic. It still sounds good, but the OCD impulses in me are really bothered by the lack of cover. :-\

    Play it backwards?

Similar to the Sonic Youth album is this (Miles Davis Live-Evil): Includes tracks named Sivad and Selim.
