Amp Camp Amp build log! (Nelson Pass Amplifier)

Indeed! Fair point. Here's another at 1kHz. There's a small 2nd and 3rd order bump, as well as a little nubbin at 5kHz:

Tests and measurements My amplifier testing rig is pretty humble - no Audio Precision gear in my stars, I'm afraid. That being said I've been using this setup for a long time and understand its nuances and gotchas, which lets me get comparative results very quickly. For those interested, I...

Amp Camp Amp build log! (Nelson Pass Amplifier)

    Thanks! Let's see, the kit was 10% off on preorder, so: $295 + $80 shipping = $375 * R15/USD = ~R5625

They're still on sale! Here you go... https://diyaudiostore.com/products/amp-camp-amp-kit Good luck running the postal service gauntlet though - maybe see if diyAudio can ship the components by Fedex or whatever as well.

Amp Camp Amp build log! (Nelson Pass Amplifier)

Amen! There's something about blue LEDs I find extremely garish... reminds me of pimped-out neon street racing cars, or overly "gamer" PC desktop cases. Or perhaps because when blue LEDs came down in price they were promptly overused by every piece of electronic equipment in the early 2000s.

Amp Camp Amp build log! (Nelson Pass Amplifier)

Right, finished up the build - chassis wiring and assembly was reasonably straight forward: The kit comes included with some "Aliexpress-grade" binding posts, but some decent RCA jacks, a DC barrel jack and an off-brand 3-pin XLR port. The toggle switch can be wired up to swap between...

Amp Camp Amp build log! (Nelson Pass Amplifier)

Uh oh, I think I may have cost you some future disposable income :P Remember to look at their quantity pricing - often buying components in multiples of 10 gives you a significantly cheaper per-unit price. Here is one of those 1% CMF55 resistors to get you going...

Amp Camp Amp build log! (Nelson Pass Amplifier)

Every now and again I put in a big order with Mouser. They charge in Rands, and spend more than R2000 and shipping is free (via Fedex, door-to-door!) but of course you have to pony up for some potentially hefty import duties when the parcel arrives.

Amp Camp Amp build log! (Nelson Pass Amplifier)

Ha ha, I was a skeptic until I tried Keratherm Red myself. Adding thermal paste is exactly the WRONG thing to do with it - it actually has a lower thermal resistance than any thermal grease on the market. Even lower than those expensive ceramic isolators or SilPad 2000. So you would be reducing...

    NAD "noise"

^ 100% agreed. In particular, slapping in higher value caps can make switch OFF thump even more aggressive. 4400uF aren't as easy to find anymore, but a decent NAD repair nerd (South Africa has plenty of them) will have the perfect parts.

Thanks! I have a pair of Monitor Audio Radius 90 speakers that are perfect for this. I use them as desktop speakers, so they won't need a lot of power, but they are incredibly sensitive - so a nice, clean amp is just what the doctor ordered. Total overkill, however! Pleasure! Oh wow, just...

Amp Camp Amp build log! (Nelson Pass Amplifier)

It's a dual layer PCB... with plated through holes. No need to solder both sides, as the holes are copper lined. I don't think I've ever seen a PTH PCB that needed soldering on both sides, unless it was a DIY etched piece of copper clad.

Amp Camp Amp build log! (Nelson Pass Amplifier)

(Going to be posting this on diyAudio as well, but thought it would be nice to see one of these on SA forums. Here goes!) I finally have my hands on a teeny tiny slice of Nelson Pass designed amplifier. As it turns out, only the chassis for the Amp Camp Amp arrives by DHL... the rest of it is...

    Members' Kit pics

Straight from Amazon. Needed a bunch of other things, so threw those in the cart. They were 20% off - so $40. They're still, absolutely worth the $50 asking price. A little cheaper on Aliexpress, but you'll wait three months to get them through the postal service, assuming they ever arrive.

The hype train got to me and I impulse ordered some Tin Audio T2s, my first set of IEMs. I've had them about a week now, and while coming from headphones the in-ears took a while to get used to, I'm happy to say the T2s more than live up to the hype. They are absolutely crystal clear...

After months of being stuck in the bowels of Joburg Mail Exchange, my Amp Camp Amp kit finally arrived! I'll start a build thread when I get around to putting it together.

A guide to sexy DIY headphone cables

Thanks very much! gavinbirss , 8thMan - fire me a PM! It may take a little while - response has been fairly overwhelming :) The master himself! Didn't realise you stocked raw Cardas as well, very useful to know. Thanks Gerlach ! You know what, I've tried guide-roping it so many times using...

A guide to sexy DIY headphone cables

At this point I've made more headphone cables than I care to count, and in my last post there was a request to document the procedure. So while it's fairly straightforward, here's my process - by no means the process, but I've learned a few nifty tricks here and there I thought I might share...

My little "Red Book DAC" - a PCM2707 based, low power USB DAC. This is the third iteration of the PCB, with an increasingly optimised component selection and ever-lower noise floor. I think this is where I'll stop for now - the fourth version would be nothing more than shrinking the components...

    Completed DIY Sennheiser HD600/650/660 cable

Got some beautiful balanced connector options today, including a bunch of high quality (and hard to find!) 4.4mm Sony-style "Pentaconn" balanced jacks, both male and female. These are really great connectors, robust and durable - far better than those pathetic 2.5mm connectors that seem to be on...
