    What's your listening volume

Did some measurements the weekend. Roger Water's Amused to Death album - can easily go to mid 80's avg with 98 peaks, no distortion and lots of headroom left. With a good system it is easy to play at volumes which when measured is a bit of a surprise. Similar to driving a refined and well...

PLEASE VOTE - Age of forum members

I started this as a poll but it is wonderful to see the participation and lots of interesting stories being shared, some members spending quite a bit of time on excellent posts. Clearly this community is alive and well and all this is a welcome respite from the daily issues we have in our country!

PLEASE VOTE - Age of forum members

Hi Ingvar, no discrimination was intended when the poll was setup. How many options to allow and which resolution to use will always be debatable. Thank you for taking part👍

Aim is to determine if there is a representative spread across age groups and specifically to see if the younger generation is still getting involved in AV. I am 52.

    Member age poll

Hi - not finding such a poll, will be interested to see member's age (and location possibly). Want to correlate how the age distribution here correlates to other hobbies I am involved with.

Power amp vs integrated stereo amp

Lots been said already, from my experience: AVR's are convenient one-box solutions focussed firstly on surround sound and then stereo. If you look at all the functionality literally crammed into them no surprise that it is a compromised solution. I started with an AVR and progressed as follows...

    What's your listening volume

Taking sound readings is actually not that simple. There is such a big difference between types of movies and types of  music. Eg, classical music escpecially with a big symphony orhestra can go from barely audible eg very fine violin solo to a big crescendo. Taking an average reading throughout...

    What's your listening volume

Another interesting check could be at say 95dB to switch off the amp(s) and see what dB's just the sub(s) is pushing out

    Getting post count up

Maxfly comes from my PPL days. Now I only have model aircraft = no flight risk. Oh and I did have a night rating on my PPL but my PPL now lapsed hence no 'fly by night' for me anymore  :ROFLMAO:

Power amp vs integrated stereo amp

Unless space is a restriction there is still a good case to be made for seperates. A proper powerfull amp will last you many years and you can then change the pre-amps or AVR's driving it as tech evolves. Another minus for integrated is that if something does break then the whole system is down...
