Kenwood KA70 left channel playing extremely soft

Thanks all. Got it sorted Went ahead and replaced all the caps(Japanese made of course), besides the two main filter caps. The problem remained though. After looking closely at the circuit diagram i took the volume control pot out and tested this, sure enough the center tapped pin which should...

Kenwood KA70 left channel playing extremely soft

Hi all, so over the weekend my trusty ka-70 started acting up. When playing, the left channel is very soft, you have to have the balance dial sitting at 9 o'clock for it to sound more or less balanced. It sound pretty much normal like this, there is no distortion i can hear but obviously...

What speakers for an old amp?

So ive had this old Kenwood ka-70 for some time. Never had speakers for it. Quite tempted by the Wharfedale Diamond 210's however they are rated for a maximum of 75Watts and my amp has a minimum rms of 65Watts per channel at 8ohms. So question is will these be ok? Thanks

    Another vintage portable radio

Will give that a go. Have millions of those little ear phones around and bits of telephone cord. Replacement speaker does its job but sounds pretty flat. The supersonic radio I have has a similar speaker(only difference is that its oval not round), had tested that in this radio and that sounded...

    Another vintage portable radio

I see. Yes measuring it where it is riveted gives the correct reading. How would I repair/ replace the braided cables there? Will have another look at those screws, they are all labeled but I think I only saw MW, SW1 and 2 on it . Tuning gang is directly under the pcb on the left, soldered to...

    Another vintage portable radio

Got pretty much all of it off looks much better now. As for the speaker visually it looks ok, cone is intact and feels strong enough but upon measuring the impedance I got a reading of around 700 Ohms. If still possible I would like to have it restored, do have a new speaker but I don't think it...

    Another vintage portable radio

Not quite sure cant find much info on the radio, have never seen a phono input on a portable radio before. Short wave works quite well on this radio, pretty clear. Found that tin foil cleans chrome quite nicely. Got 90% of the rust and oxidation off, left no scratches behind and really got it...

    Another vintage portable radio

All is well now. Got a new speaker, not quite the same size so you wont be able to get the 4 D cells in there now, but I was always going to replace them with a rechargeable 6v battery pack which is much smaller so that will fit. Replaced all the capacitors whilst i was busy, cleaned all the...

    Another vintage portable radio

 I feel so stupid. Did not even think to try that, I connected headphones and the distortion was still there so I did not try. But yes it works 100% with another loudspeaker, sound is quite nice actually. Will go to RSE and see if they have a similar speaker to use as a replacement...

    Another vintage portable radio

Not yet, was searching for any obvious signs of trouble. This radio does have an aux in interestingly, tried that to see if maybe the problem was not with the amplifier part but same result. The equivalent for the 2sb178 is a AC128 I think. I am sure i saw some here somewhere

    Another vintage portable radio

yes all the transistors except one are germanium, output transistors are a pair of 2SB178's. Tested them seemed ok but then again maybe not

    Another vintage portable radio

Was in Parys again and found this at the same place i got the supersonic from. This one is a National Panasonic RF-947Y made locally by barlows in 1968 In pretty good shape, everything is there and all original but unfortunately it does not work as well as it looks. The sound is heavily...

    Anybody know what this is

Yep. There are some notes written on masking tape on the bottom of the radio mentioning repairs that were carried out but other than the if transformers being fiddled with the rest seems pretty original. Sounded surprisingly good when i first turned it on, dial lights still work too Casing has...

    Anybody know what this is

So was in prays a few months back and looking in the many antique shops for some vintage audio equipment and found this: Just says conquest supersonic on the front, could not find any model number only that it was made in Rhodesia around 1967 . It does still work at least, previous owner...
