Will I get improved video and audio with another box

Nvidia Shield just works... Yes, it's expensive compared to the most of the other options, but it's just so much more capable... Tegra chipset is fast and powerful enough for some gaming / emulation. It can stream gaming from your PC. No video / audio Codec issues - Plex works like a dream on...

    Guillaume Lemaire

Having somehow managed to miss the news of Guillaume's passing the entire day, I'm in absolute shock and genuinely saddened. One of the most unpretentious and genuine audiophiles I've had the pleasure meeting. His infectious love for the hobby, constant willingness to lend advice, and witty...

    HDMI to RF Modulator recommendations

KenMasters & co - please gather round. Gents, I need advice. We?ve got a fairly elaborate Coax cabling reticulation throughout the new house, from a previous DSTV installation. We're not inclined to set up DSTV again, unless absolutely unavoidable. I now want to set up a single Android...

    LF: laptop for son

Thanks for the referrals gents. I still actively sell - just don't advertise much on the forums anymore. JayJay - PM incoming - I may have just the machine for you, provided you're willing to stretch the budget a tad.

    PS4 or PS4 Pro?

That's mad money for a PS4 Pro - The Xbox One X can be had for R7k if you shop carefully.  :???: I'm sure I saw PS4 Pro's going for R6499 in November. If anything, I suspect it's a national stock shortage driving the price up, as most places seem to be out of stock.

It?s all over. I?ve heard Zu Druids

+1 - I've heard that setup, and it's very, very good. I found it a tad lacking in the bass region, but it's also deceptive due to the speed -- The bass is tight with an unnervingly quick decay, so you get no sense of rumble or "weighty" overhang. It takes a bit of getting used to, but once...

4K HDR AV Processor / Receiver recommendations?

Howzit gents Having now purchased a shiny new 4K HDR TV, the rest of the playback chain requires attention... as per usual, you change one thing in your system, and it reveals the shortcomings of other components, thus necessitating an upgrade... 🙄 My HTPC isn?t quite up to the job, as it...

Is it possible for different hard surfaces to affect bass drastically?

My first thought would be one of the subs playing out of phase and partially cancelling out the other. But I?d probably be wrong - I don?t know jack about proper setup.

Using a AVR as a power amp

It?s doable - though it may colour the signal somewhat with its own circuitry, regardless of selecting Pure Direct mode, considering that even as a direct RCA input, it still passes through a digital volume control domain. Only way to know for sure is try it. The theory is sound. (Pardon the...

Samsung MU8000 series TV's - yay or nay?

Nah... 75? is another step down in size, and the only review I could find of the HiSense 9 series panels mentions backlight bleed and less-than-stellar upscaling. While it?s a quantum dot jobby, being 75?, I would probably have found some reason to fault it and convince myself that I should?ve...

Samsung MU8000 series TV's - yay or nay?

For frog's steak's, you're absolutely right - Precision Black and Peak Illuminator Pro, as opposed to Precision Black Pro & Peak Illuminator Ultimate - well spotted and thank you! FALD is UE78KS9500 = UA78KS9800, which we never got in SA... FML. Screw it. 82MU8000 it is then.

Samsung MU8000 series TV's - yay or nay?

I?ve seen the 82MU8000 in the flesh at Digital Experience Fourways - it?s mighty impressive, but obviously not as vibrant and bright as the R450k 88Q9F behemoth in terms of image quality - and that?s noticeable even on a brightly lit shop floor. My thinking is, given the rave reviews of the...

Samsung MU8000 series TV's - yay or nay?

So Loot.co.za cocked up my order, and now the price is back at R70k for the MU8000.. I can get one for just over R65k from distributors. I've found a 78KS9500 (150-zone FALD, Quantum Dot) for R90k. What says the TV experts? Is KS9500 the way to go, given the extra expense?

Samsung MU8000 series TV's - yay or nay?

Meh... NU series will still be edge-lit - and I can't justify the price of a 75" Quantum Dot panel. 82MU8000 is on special at a smidge over R60k at the moment - so unless I manage to find a demo 78KS9500 somewhere for cheap, I reckon I'll pull the trigger.

Samsung MU8000 series TV's - yay or nay?

I have a bee in my bonnet for a TV upgrade... Currently have the 65HU9000, and while it's a brilliant panel, it was a relatively early 4k release, lacking 10-bit colour & HDR, thus not really complying to the full 4K spec. I had been checking into 75" panels, but I'm not inclined to drop R40k...
