    Tax software

Thanks for the suggestions. Have been using a tax-consultant for a while but want a means to check their numbers and ultimately to terminate that arrangement. Will have a closer look at TaxTim.

    Tax software

I'm looking for software to do my income tax - the only one I've found so far is Softbyte and at R 2 500 per year it's a bit steep for private one-off use. The package needs to cater for foreign income and provisional payments. Any constructive suggestions would be welcome.

    Windows 10 product keys - provenance ?

Thanks to all for the suggestions. After looking into the matter further, I downloaded a utility (not the Nirsoft product but this also works) that can read the authorisation code from the BIOS in newer machines, to extract the OEM activation key. I applied this and received the usual brush-off...

    Windows 10 product keys - provenance ?

One hates to admit being the victim of a scam but if my story saves someone else from the same experience I can live with the shame ... I bought a new (?) Lenovo T480 from Bluetech Computers, a small retail store in Bellville (address : 79 Barnard St, Oakdale), for a good price about a year...

    Home NAS for NOOB

I've taken a slightly different approach which suits my circumstances better. I started with FreeNAS on a home-built platform but stopped using it after a while - I have no Linux experience or any other Linux machines. It was fine when things worked well but I was a bit lost when problems...

    Polk Audio Lsim 707

Hmmm... My suggestion to the OP to consult Google was not intended as a put-down. It occurred to me that the topic of bi-wiring would be covered exhaustively on the Web (the search I suggested produced almost 7 000 000 hits). The idea itself is simple enough but the results would, I imagine, be...

Try using Google "biwiring speakers" ?

    Speaker 'breakup' (Mission 705)

Jaws - thanks for the suggestion - will have a look at that. SeanS - Haven't swapped channels yet - will do so. The dropout is limited to mid-range driver. My thinking (and I'm a complete beginner with this) is that the crossover is not filtering (if that's the correct word) enough of the bass...

    Speaker 'breakup' (Mission 705)

An interesting development - I swapped the drivers between the speakers and the 'break-up' remained in the same speaker, suggesting the problem's in the crossover.  Time for some professional attention, I think.

Interesting about the pigtails - will have a close look.

    Speaker 'breakup' (Mission 705)

Thanks for the prompt response. Will have a closer look at the driver and perhaps let a specialist have a look - when this wretched lockdown is over.

    Speaker 'breakup' (Mission 705)

I've noticed recently when playing through my Mission 705 speakers at highish volumes what I believe is a case of speaker 'breakup' in one of the mid-range cones. The sound is similar to that of hands clapping; there is also the occasional momentary drop-out of any sound. It seems odd for two...

    No sound from tweeter

I  bypassed the cap for the tweeter in the offending speaker, as suggested (thanks - a good suggestion), played signal tones from 5Khz up to 10 kHz and the formerly quiet tweeter started working; so, a dud cap - not surprising but good to have it confirmed. Not an essential good so will have to...

    Fixing a speaker - How?

For the record, the other party in Resonant Frequency goes by the name of Elsa - she describes to herself as a partner rather than as an assistant (see https://www.avforums.co.za/index.php/topic,16288.msg951375.html#msg951375.

    No sound from tweeter

Thanks for the suggestions - will give it a go. I have a set of test signals from https://www.wavecor.co.uk/testdisk.html - recommended.

    No sound from tweeter

Thanks for the further suggestions. Baine Bloodhoof : After scouring the Web, it appears the relevant cap is the 4 microfarad (nF ?) cap, the smallest cap on the crossover. Given the age of the speakers am tempted to replace all the caps, given I'm in there. Will check first continuity from the...

    No sound from tweeter

Thanks for the suggestions - will have a look at the relevant cap(s) after I have dug up a wiring diagram for the crossover.

    No sound from tweeter

I acquired recently a pair of Mission 705 speakers. No sound is emerging from one of the tweeters. I swapped it with the tweeter in the other speaker and it works fine there, suggesting the problem is in the wiring of the speaker. The speakers are bi-wired but the corresponding mid-range is...

    Without Being Insensitive!...

Given both the decline of the Rand and (I presume) the willingness of the dealers to discuss discounts this is a good time to be refreshing kit.

Best Dac with or without volume control for Integrated stereo amp

More context would be useful - what are the "types" you mention ? There seems little point in using a DAC with volume control if one is connecting it to an amp - an unnecessary cost and potential source of degraded output or failure. Do you want to be able to use head-phones ?
