    Dishonest forum member

AVTalk and this forum are still running concurrently and many of us are on both - the big migration never happened. The 50 post rule probably died when the "for profit" drive started?

    Excel Hanging

Maybe I missed it, but the OS is 64-bit, right? And Office? If not 64-bit, I'd install the 64-bit version, and then of course follow all the other good recommendations in this thread.

Sony U-matic Video Cassette Player VP-5030 info

I found this: U-matic - Wikipedia I remember U-matic from my high school days - we had a "TV squad" and the hardware was all Sony U-matic, probably donated from somewhere. U-Matic was extensively used in pro broadcast setups.

Ja, because surges always leave visible evidence, right? I call BS.

PA related: budget UHF dual wireless mic system?

So, which budget UHF wireless mics? I do small scale PA for NPO/charity, sometimes involving kids using the stuff. I have some decent Shure and Samson, but I need something that is half decent, that I am not too sorry for. For the cheapies, I am currently using a Gemini UHF, but it clips easily...

    Reliable UPS batteries

I have used small APC units for many years. Most of the APC packs are made up using CSB brand OEM batteries. You can get loose CSB batteries from places like Current Automation. The made-up APC "RBC" packs are ridiculously expensive for what they are. Just reuse the connectors (if applicable)...

    Load Shedding and AV Receiver

Suggestion re. the risk of on/off cycling: I would add one of Clearline's appliance protectors. Apart from surge, over- and undervoltage protection, it has a 10 second timer. This means that of there are multiple short duration on/offs after loadshedding, the timer will prevent the connected...

    SONY D-250 DISCMAN Battery

What a lovely little machine! I would also just be sure to use a proper regulated supply, not one of the cheapie supermarket DC adaptors.

Recommendation on portable battery power station or portable generator

Very true. I think many gens in SA are being used far beyond runtime design specs these days, and many standby duty gens are run almost as prime power.

Recommendation on portable battery power station or portable generator

Revov seems to have a good reputation in SA. The biggest challenge with multiple load shedding events per day is that there is often not enough time for batteries to fully recharge. With lithium this is not as bad, because recharge rates are higher and risk of battery damage due to deep...

Impact of load-shedding on your hifi related priorities and habits?

Have been running a small solar setup for around 3 years. Had to change some hi-fi habits - the (small) inverter is not too fond of the large inrush caused by turning on a 200+200 Watt Class AB power amp. If no other large loads are on, then it is business as usual and the inverter and hi-fi kit...

    Silly neon rant

I grew up with one foot still in the last of the valve era, but all electronic gadgetry fascinate me. I remember that the standard resistor value for a little wire-ended neon on 220 Volt is around 220k Ohm. Somehow equipment manfacturers, specifically those making multiplugs and similar, always...
