It doesn't block Java scripting which is widely used, only applets that require the plugin. You will find 90% of people don't even use it and wouldn't notice any change.

If you're into Apple/MacOSX a 2nd-hand Mac Mini with Plex installed makes for a great HTPC.

+1 to Dennis' solution. Rather use optical to receiver and HDMI straight to TV since all you will ever be able to output is dolby digital so it's not like you will lose any audio quality going this route.
