By the sounds of things what you actually want is a port replicator (docking station). Depending on notebook make and model you may be able to buy it as an accessory otherwise you can look at generic options like Targus.

IIRC OSMC was originally RaspBMC so there is a good track record of development from when the Pi first came out.
There is however something to be said for the spec bump in the the Pi 2. I'm currently running OpenELEC on a Pi 2 and was very happy to replace the HPMS that was doing OpenELEC...

Sound: Too early to compare to my little Fiio E10, but certainly sounding fuller.
I quite like some of the subtleties like the on off switch and the hinge for adjusting the ear cups looks really nice.
