If in Gauteng .. unplug ! I made the stupid mistake of running a Cat6 cable outside (2m in conduit) between two buildings on my property. First decent lighting storm and it took the adsl modem, 2 switches, the motherboards in 2 PC's and one of the network ports on my PC. Lesson learned  :'(
