    Faulty volume control

Be careful with spray cleaners. I have yet to see one that doesn't dilute the grease where you need it - in the shaft housing, it's what gives the control that nice dampened feel. A better way is to remove and open the rotary encoder, then physically wipe the grease from the contact areas...

    Unusual Application of Toilet Roll!

You either love them or you hate them. I did see one somewhere online referred to as a 'dropping'. Here's another view showing the tubes.

    Precision Acoustix preamp 3

The best way to troubleshoot is by process of elimination. Have you proved that the pre-amp actually works by playing a CD through it? If you can play a CD, and the sound quality is good, no hum etc, then you know the pre and power amp are properly connected and working. After that, disconnect...

Precision acoustix PA 400 amp and pre amp 3

Err... the PA200 / PA400 amps were designed by Stirling Marais (currently a member of Cosine Developments) and most if not all were assembled in Durban by Sounds Specialist. The Daan Jacobs amps were those loaf shaped mono blocks, and some sold under the Precision Acoustix name.....it was a...

    Unusual Application of Toilet Roll!

Not every day you see one of these... It's a Consonance Droplet. Didn't sound too bad either!

    Precision Acoustix preamp 3

I've worked on 2 of the Precision Acoustix pre-amp models, the original one and the one that followed with remote capability. As far as the electronics goes, they're pretty bullet proof. The controls and switches do sometimes need cleaning. It's unlikely to be component failure in the pre...

    Thank You!

Hi guys, Haven't been here in ages and been meaning to do this for a while. Apparently there are a few folk here who have recommended me over the years (I do repairs to AV gear in the Cowies Hill / Westville KZN area) and others who have supported me as a result of those recommendations. So...

    Cars and Computers

Ok, had time to deflate a bit but do agree Renault service leaves a lot to be desired. I bought a new Renault van several years ago and made the mistake of paying cash for it. Obviously i did an eft but this made them very suspicious and i was treated like a crook for nearly a week after the...

    Best "Budget" Tablet?

Thanks for that link! Some interesting reading. Come to think about it, some of our Groupon "eat outs" didn't go too well either. You make a reservation, arrive at the venue and are then told it's closed for a private function! When it happened the second time.... well my ex is a VERY fiery...

    Should mom just give up?

Sorry, there is no such thing as "seamlessly in the background" when using Edge. Perhaps in a First World environment but even there i have my reservations. Do i want to be annoyed by pop-ups as you have stated above? Yes i do. If i know whats interfering with my computer i can take steps to...

    Should mom just give up?

Yes i have. I was going to live out there at one time and needed internet to do what i do. It is my understanding that if Edge is all that's available, boosting the signal will still only give you Edge. You may find that Edge works better, less dropouts etc but you will still be limited to...

    Should mom just give up?

Last i heard, it was Edge or nothing. Corroborated by other people living in the area, neighbours etc.

    Best "Budget" Tablet?

Noted  :) Sorry, i'm not quite with you on this one? Somehow i've managed to get onto the Groupon mailing list so i get stuff emailed to me everyday. That's how i became aware of the ZTE. I like to do a bit of "homework" before i buy stuff so i'll Google the product independently anyway...

    Best "Budget" Tablet?

Right guys, you've all made some very good points: 1) It's for the folks so a big screen is good. 2) Portable devices with stuffed batteries are useless as portable devices. 3) The better (quality and robustness) the user interface, the more satisfactory the "computing" experience. 4) The...
