Title: What Browser do you use?
Post by: alternativeroute on May 24, 2011, 11:20:03 PM
For years I have been using Firefox but of late I have been having problems with it... It slows my whole machine to a crawl (machine becomes almost unusable). I force it too close (Ctrl+Alt+Del) and then the computer is fine again.

It has gotten on my nerves so much that I have installed Chrome which is so much quicker... But with less features...

The problem is I need FF as I use firebug quite extensively and the firebug equivelent for Chrome is not as powerful...

I have updated FF and all plugins... I thought it was an XP problem but now I use windows 7 and have the exact same problem. I have two other machines (and a part time laptop) running in the office and they also have the same FF problem. I cannot pick up a real pattern to the problem but I suspect either Java or Flash is causing the slowdown.

Anyone experience the same thing?

Work machine is on FF4, home PC still on 3.6.9. Very happy with both versions, although I prefer the layout of v3.
Chrome seems to all the rage, but I see no real reason to switch. FF serves me well.

Haven't used IE in years.

I also prefer the V3.x.x layout... I cannot find the zoom reset on V4  >:(

IE9 for me thanks. Not a fan of Chrome and not all websites are compatible with the Fox...but I have used it before for years.

With the NoSquint extension you get a zoom reset button.

I use FF 4, (Windows 7, 64-bit). I also used V3.x.x with both XP and W7, but I never had the problems alternativeroute has.

Like Prince I cannot go without my favourite extensions.

FireFox 4 on Win7 Ultimate 64-bit.

Been using ImageZoom add-on since FF3.  Allows you to set zoom text only or both text and images, as well as image\text reset.

I use a mixture of browsers! IE9 has pleasantly surprised me. I also use FF and have tried Chrome, but IE9 works fine for now.

also using firefox (4.0.1), and having the same issue that it occasionally slows the system down. zoom works fine with ctrl and + or -
I especially like the tabs, which ie didn't have when I switched.

I use Chrome across Mac and Windows, but I have to say IE9 is finally a browser I may be able to put up with if I was stuck on Windows. Safari 5.1 (part of OS X Lion) is showing great promise as well - it uses the new WebKit split process model and is super responsive.

Can't survive without my Firefox plugins.. With the release of FF 3.5 I experimented a bit with Chrome and was impressed at the browser speed, but I went back to the Fox when they released version 4.

Which plugins are you using?

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/performance/

And which version of FF? (4 being loads faster than 3)

Stalwart Firefox user for years.  A bizillion add-ons installed.

Then along came Chrome.... I continually run the latest beta version, and so so happy.
The only FF add-on I miss are tabs in right hand vertical bar; Chrome can do but only on LHS.
Chrome is unbeatable for syncing bookmarks and extensions amongst multiple machines, not to forget speeeed !!!
( also built in spell-checker for posts like these :) )

Chrome - for about 1 year or more. Like it for speed and simplicity. Sometimes go back to FF4  when Chrome fails to display page properly - this is rare case now.
