I'm going to assume you mean EDM as in electronic dance music - house, techno, electro, and all the subgenres, and maybe electronic and industrial and so on - and not EDM the lost orphan genre.

I used to enjoy Armin quite a bit, especially the Universal Religion comps.

No.3 being my all-time favorite, now all his State of Trance comps sound like a Eurovision song contest.

I'm now enjoying Above and Beyond a lot, especially the Anjunabeats, Anjunadeep as well as the acoustic comps.
Markus Schulz and Invected Mushroom when I'm in the mood.

Well I was listening to D.A.F. and Front 242 on the weekend, dunno if that still counts or is even more subgenred out nowadays

Can’t beat ‘Der Mussolini’ or ‘Headhunter’

D.A.F. ? ...Deutsche...

My wife was a fan of Front242. ...back in the day.

Ja, anything, electronic, ......appears in dj mixes like for RA and XLR8R ... (Resident Advisor) and they usually mention it. Mix from a few months ago that i listened to today, has Tangerine Dream, the 1st track.
All major influences,...........techno is rooted more in England than it is in Detroit..I think. :) Electronic dance. Originally, 1 England, 2 maybe Germany, maybe America..? and Japan always connected somehow.

PS: Ohh of course, Deutsche Amerikanische Freundschaft

IMHO LFO put it best on their debut - YMO, Kraftwerk, Sheffield sound, Detroit, Chicago and the rest.

I’d say Berlin School (TD, Conrad Schnitzler, Asmus Tiechens, etc), Düsseldorf (Neu!, La Düsseldorf and Harmonia), Eno, YMO, Industrial Records, Cabaret Voltaire, Depeche Mode, Human League, New Order, Ze records, Chicago House, Detroit House, EBM (and the light industrial scene - Skinny Puppy, DAF, Nitzer Ebb, Fini Tribe, Aphex Twin) then it went global with rave etc

@JohnnyP: "Just a quick one," (I'm on mobile, away from home laptop,) a suggestion: Lawrence English.  Genre: Electronic. (Not dance.) Composer, not dj/producer. Field recordings based - much of it.) Ambient. (I hesitated to say that, for a long time. Ambient literally, perhaps, not as in wishy-washy, the usual.)
Google 1st page gets you pretty much everything - wiki, youtube, bandcamp, theguardian, Resident Advisor...one of the reviews there:
Quote
However distantly, ambient music always seems intrinsically linked to nature, an alternative soundtrack to the constant hum of our shared space. So when Lawerence English—founder of the room40 imprint—entitled his Touch debut Kiri No Oto, a Japanese phrase for "sound of fog," it seemed like a sensible connection, invoking a visual sensation that might easily translate into music.

Combining field recordings from Poland, New Zealand, Australia, and Japan with organ sounds, analog filtering, and harmonic drone sections, English has created an album just as transporting as the fog- and oceanscapes he's exploring. Dense coils of distortion coalesce into diffuse, light-streaked passages, revealing undulations in balance that waver between eerie calm and new motion. English creates a head space for the most foreign elements of the natural world, embracing the kinetic surf and blow of mist while respecting its natural lethargy, its willingness to shift and dip without overcoming its environment.

But English is rarely content with long gliding organ tones, or the overwrought emotional aspects his subject might too easily evoke. His compositions evolve in the unclockable time of the outdoors. He keeps them in a constant flux that mirrors the unpredictable calms and clamors of his environment. He depends on subtle countertextures to expose anything that glistens or reflects too much to the sandpapering of salt-air. The uneasy textures of opener "Organs Lost at Sea" break unexpectedly, giving into the morning-after spell of "Soft Fuse." "White Spray," with its caustic squalls of noise, is sifted into the distant church-like tones of "Waves Sheer Light," which achieves the lightless illumination feel of anything seen through a cloak of fog or mist.

"Lullaby" is even murkier, with its harmonic elements contrasted by a deep, dim racket like something banging against sunken metal, hidden beneath the sea. Ostensibly the subtlest piece here, "Figure's Lone Static" is busier beneath the surface than you first think, twisting bristling noise into a repeating, two-tone organ part until they both dissolve into "Oamura"'s leaden drones. As always with English's work on Kiri No Oto though, it's structured to feel like its testing the limits of its own atmosphere without really moving, lapping at the spots where the water's warmer, the air more breathable.

I started with a podcast mix, then went on to almost complete collection.

Well, that wasn't really a quick one, just skipped the roots/origin/influence topic for the time being.

Thanks Katji, I had a quick listen to the Kiri No Oto album this afternoon - will definitely investigate further.  I also had a quick look on the Die or DIY blog and the guy has posted some DAF early stuff and live tapes.  Hadn’t been to the blog for a bit and seems he’s been posting Neue Deutsche Welle and it’s electronic offshoots.  Got some listening to do! Der Plan, DAF, Abwarts and more! And a few comps he reckons wouldn’t sound out of place on a Conny Schnitzler album.

Taped from the record back in 1990/1991, the tape was a mainstay for my design project - along with Nirvana and 1000 Homo DJs on the other side and both Joy Division albums on another tape.  Must have been played over 500 times since recording it for the walkman, has been to at least 7 countries and spent a few months in a friend's car in Durban when she didn't have a CD or mp3 player in there.

Still sounds good (both the tape and the album) if a little too 'teenage angst' for my taste nowadays on the lyrics.  Great idea though, take Depeche Mode, add a few guitars, sample Janes Addiction, a sprinkling of Ministry, some Manson and Crowley quotes and up the sado-masochism of DMs darker moments and you have an album that might take time but will eventually take over the world.

Fancied a bit of Clock DVA myself, early stuff though so it may count or not count as EDM - you can dance to it and it has electronics:
Industrial very much in the origins of techno...and still a major thread in techno, the dark side.
My view is quite influenced by XLR8R and Resident Advisor and FACT mag.........and there is also distinction between techno and house played in clubs, and what they call "big room" - the big venues, stadiums, Ibiza, where there is no scope for playing industrial and 'electronic'.  And the mixes done for those magazines, the DJ/producers often say how it allows them to play music they listen to at home, that they probably wouldn't play at a club.

wow :) Good write-up. Lyrics and 'teenage angst' - and it goes way further than that with me...it's something I've thought of quite a lot this year or so, that I don't like songs now, that less than 10% of what I listen to are actually songs. And much of that is soulful house, or disco throwbacks, even that is only sometimes/ occasionally now. I prefer it to be samples of vocals from earlier house/disco tracks.
You get people saying "it all sounds the same", and "doof-doof" - but they listen to Blues! Or hip-hop.  I can't still be listening to "my baby left me" and so on all my life!  :D

Autechre, because the latest RA: Playing Favourites feature article, the two DJs - natural/electronic.system - included it in their selection.

Giova: The entire album [Incunabula] is amazing. We picked this one because it's an alternative to Autechre's alien, futurist style. It's full of soft electronics and rhythms—organic instead of mechanical. And it tells a story.

Go on, blink; for the first time in fifteen years Autechre’s peerless debut album, Incunabula is reissued as a facsimile copy of the original, 1993 release, replete with silver-printed gatefold jacket.

We’re not going to bang on about this too much, but you should know by now that Incunabula is one of the cornerstones of modern electronic music, one of the pinnacles of the British rave epoch and among the most life-affirming records ever, bar none.

Aye, it’s 100% essential.

Quote
Autechre's debut Incunabula is seen in the eyes of many as a step forward in the electronic genre. Autechre's debut varies in style ranging from hollow to benevolent within the music. Initially the first album brought out by Sean Booth and Rob Brown would actually join a catalogue from Warp Records entitled Artificial Intelligence. Its purpose? To show the change and immense capabilities in electronic music from 1992-1994. Although they're known as the leaders of IDM, techno, and the electronic genre now, as unknowns Richard D. James, Autechre, The Orb, and Richie Hawtin are the few who contributed to this collection for their label Warp. There is no doubt that series has left an imprint on the minds of many for the generation only learning to love a relatively new genre. Obscure and unrelenting at times, IDM can be your best friend or your worst enemy. Incunabula is the testament of Autechre's and a genre's legacy, which is still going strong after 20 or so years.

It may be the reason from immense progress that so much of Incunabula feels linear in a way. Each direction of the music takes a turn for the better, even if it isn't something new to the ear nowadays, it can be seen across the genre in the present time of Autechre's vast influence. Although the style changes from classic electronic movements, ambient, and sometimes minimalistic techno Incunabula shows how important Autechre was for this movement. [...]
Quote
Incunabula was in many ways a turning point for electronic music, full of housey chords and classic techno drums but woven together in a way that only Autechre could. After the inauspicious beginnings of the bizzarely titled 'Kalpol Introl', 'Bike' is a whimsical and throbbing tech-house number, full of dynamic analogue sweeps and dusty phasing, paddling arps taking the lead role for most of the piece beforebeing driven along by a shuffling 909-hats and smooth kicks.

Fast-forward to 'Autriche' and there is a slightly lighter ambient number, comparable to the more off-piste moments of their lauded second album, before launching into the glitched footwork-esque truncated snare hits of 'Basscadet' ; ducked percussive slaps and snarling basses click and bounce into a rhythmic agreement, if not in complete harmony, at least fighting together in some sort of gritted-teeth cease-fire.

There is more than a glimmering of Autechre's later trademark sound on build-fall-build numbers like 'Doctrine', moving elements into the mix before fading out into a smoking pile, destroyed and fastidiously rebuilt.

Though this was but a start for Autechre, it came to define the sound that so many loved ; crackling and devastating electronic passages interspersed with moments of shining musical lucidity. Often emulated, but rarely bettered.

I hope there's a CD release - although it seems unlikely, going by google results. Must check discogs now.

Incanabula was released on CD at the time, probably available through your preferred streaming service nowadays.  Definitely check out Mira Calix, she was married to one of Autechre if memory serves and born in Durban.  Her first album had a picture of her aged about 4 standing in front of the concrete Clover balloon.  I bought it a few years before coming over here and thought WTF? Then saw the Thing on arrival!

Yes, CD.  A very long list of releases on discogs. I might have to resort to discogs and shipping, I must check my wishlist there.  There's a chance my ex-wife had it and it's in a box at my other place. Although I think I'd remember it.  She was more into Aphex twin and Squarepusher.

Autechre... I found that Junodownload has most of it - discogs lists WAV / FLAC / MP3 releases - 2000-something, presumably from the CD reissues.  I'd thought that junodownload [and beatport and traxsource] didn't have it, because they don't show up on the first 3 pages of google results.  And Warp Records website has some, redirects to merchant bleep.com .

So I got Amber and Garbage :) not Incunabula because I think it might be in the boxes of CDs at my other place - the cover seems quite familiar.  And I got Boards Of Canada - a beautiful place out in the country.
I just now finished sorting out the FLAC tags. Then there's a lot more.  Maybe after a while with those two, I'll move on to the later, more difficult albums.

Cardini is currently in the middle of a two-week US tour, followed by gigs in Ibiza, Israel, Paris, and Amsterdam. Come November, she will also participate in the Venice Art Biennale with Andre Bratten for an art installation in the French pavilion by Xavier Veilhan.

For podcast 508, Cardini has supplied an hour of low-slung grooves that give listeners a small taste of the hypnotizing magic on which she has built her name.

Was there a particular idea or mood you were looking to convey?

A good mixture of home listening and music to dance to, I hope I succeeded. It's always hard for me to deliver a podcast, so many tracks I love and only such little time. The mix starts with I:Cube, one of my favorite producers.

You launched Dischi Autuno this year with an LP from Dollkraut, with one on the way from The Magic Ray—what are your plans for the label and what can we expect?

This label is more focused on bands and home listening music, we mainly focus on releasing albums without sticking to any genre, it can go from ambient to rock—nothing is defined.

Islam Chipsy - Boiler Room set live December 2017 on a rooftop in Giza.  Absolutely unique, two drummers, one dude on keyboards (IC) making Arabic wedding party pop that sounds like Nintendo themes with live drums and Cairo taxi vibes

Google to find it on SoundCloud or Youtube

I think this is their best album.

The Downward Spiral is a very close second though.

Tell me about it. I got into Dark wave a few years ago which eventually led me to Alien Vampires and A Violent Emotion type groups. Sometimes I am into it, sometimes not.

Located it again (inspired by the news that a new EP drops soon):

Aphex Twin soundcloud dump curated into 15 album length sections (possibly by the main himself?):

https://soundcloud.com/selectabwoy/sets/aphex-twin-soundcloud-albums

How long it'll last this time is anyone's guess.

hmm, 60Mb for LP length,...will not be 320, gonna see now.

PS: gah, 192, leaves me undecided.

Selected Ambient Works Vol 1 was home recordings onto cassette and had poor sound quality until (and possibly after - I don't know, mine's an earlier copy) re-mastering in 2006.  I expect some of the earlier parts were recorded on similarly cheap equipment so 320kbps isn't really going to make much difference

:giggle: No, it's fine. I just checked now. Thought my reposting it might've led to it being removed.
I should've made it clear...I went back to that Aphex Twin page and noticed this one in the related tracks sidebar.  lol.  Some people. And it's a Norwegian.  :giggle:
