Title: What's on the tape? Now Playing
Post by: JonnyP on March 01, 2017, 06:22:02 PM
Thought this forum could also do with a now playing.  OK, so I haven't got an R2R (yet  :rubhands:) but I've moved the cassette deck (Nak BX300) to the bedroom and am now happily falling asleep to albums and compilations I haven't listened to in years.

On the deck at the moment:

Wheat - Hope and Adams (side one)
East River Pipe - Poor Fricky (side two)

Taped off a mate in the late 90s/early 2000s and sound as good today as then.

Let us know! Type (R2R/Cassette/ZX Microdrive cartridge/8 track) artist and album.....

1980s. The last of Analogue or the death of music. Studer, almost at the end  and a rather important album for this country.

your Revox is threaded incorrectly. The tape goes between the headblock and the guide pin.

Maybe. I hardly ever use the G36 for replay as I seriously dislike its tape path. I prefer the Studer machines with their rolling guides.

The G36 was a consumer machine from a time tapes were cheap and plentiful, On the odd occasion this machine sees use ,it is bad enough to have the heads and stationary guides  scrape oxide of the playing surface of my old, fragile tapes so I am not going to have the back coating scraped of as well.Right or wrong-that is why it is threaded that way.

Nice! :) Time to 're-commision' my Tandberg and Nagra 4.2 and get mesmerised by blue VU's and modulometers. I have some interesting/colourful rtor tapes here of two pilots having a conversation and I think somewhere I have a live mono recording of Mireille Mathieu. Did she ever visit South Africa?

I once had a Tandberg 3500X with a "cross-field head".  At 3 3/4 i/s it certainly gave better results than the SONY it replaced, but I found the build quality not all that great and the audio quality varied between brands of tape

This is someone else's picture of the same deck.  I never had the reel clamps

TEAC A-170 set up in the office and currently blasting out 'Two Sevens Clash' by the immensely great and incredibly stoned Culture.  The tape itself is a ZMC official bootleg quality which I just noticed has a misspelling on the first track listed as 'Calling Rasta For 1' rather than 'Calling Rastafari'.  Think it cost all of Z$20 in the bootleg tape shop I used to frequent by the taxi rank in Bulawayo along with many other reggae classics.  Most of the tapes have died - this one is still going strong although sound quality is probably a little worse than it originally was.

Amplification? - Philips valve amp
Speakers - Currently just using the Lorentz drivers directly connected - still not finished the crazy frog cabinets (haven't managed to get down to the wood cutting place)

Oh that's interesting .. mean I've been threading my Akai incorrectly as well ? I must check ... tx ...
But what's the risk / impact of doing it wrong ?

Ok no , the Akai don't have that type of guide pin so the tape goes under the guide then to the head block ...

You tape the stream from your favourite service, voila, there's your album. And it's guaranteed to sound better than the original stream.

Iíve also not looked into buying prerecorded good source material .. scared of what pricing might be ...
so only using it to record LPís.

But record good sources at 15IPS up and youíll be pleasantly surprised at how good these can get.

Oh then thereís the issue of good quality tape

I love your TASCAM 122/Mk 2.  Beautiful.  My 112 had an excellent service from Hans Lemmerer a couple of years ago.  Not something to let go of, that's for sure.

Nothing as fancy here but listening to John Peel compilations I made back in 2000.  Sessions by Add (N) to X, Samurai Seven, Monkey Steals the Drum and more plus random tracks which I liked at the time like Gorkyís Zygotic Munki currently playing.  Have to dig out the Hefner live set and Calexico at Peel Acres in a bit

Same machine. Garth Moore repaired the opto-coupler circuit in the motor and Skollie, already very ill and frail, straightened the capstan shaft using all sorts of  Hanekom tricks and gadgets. Unfortunately Postnet dropped the then near perfect motor on its return . It runs true with no audible W&F but is noisy. I have been trying to source another motor from the usual sources but have been unsuccesful.

The machine needed an incredible amount of work but sounds wonderful. Frequency response is very good. After cleaning of the scrape flutter roller and properly adjusting it and the heads, the machine has a very musical tone with more detail retrieval than the Ampex. The A80 sounds more clinical and precise. I'd say soundwise it falls somewhere between the boogie woogie funky but somewhat veiled Ampex sound and the Kraftwerk/Tangerine dream/Holger Czukay sound of the Studer A80.

I really MUST get to mine.... it also needs much work, in fact never been powered up since I got it.
New Nortronics heads awaiting installation.

Absolutely nothing fancy here...  I am running a Harman Kardon TD-450

Currently loaded with a TDK AD-C60 from the late 1970s - http://www.c-90.org/catalogue/tapes/TDK/TDK%20AD-C/0
The cassette has Leonard Cohen on both sides.
Side A - Songs of Love and Hate
Side B - Various Positions

Some classic Frankie S, Simply Red, Sting, Norah J, Rod Stewart, followed with some Eagles & Mr George Michael almost ending with Willie Nelson singing to Santana, finished by Joni Michell both sides now, sweeter than ever on my freshly recapped 1500...

What could be better..??

Nothing as impressive, Billy Bragg at Reading Festival 25th August 1990.  Bootleg bought 15 minutes after heíd left the stage from the boot king at the back of the festival site.  Interesting (and terrifying and sad) that the songs fit so well with the current geopolitics and rise of neo-Fascism in the US, UK and parts of Europe.
