Title: Imports: Scott's Shipping Services
Post by: ScottulusMaximus on January 23, 2017, 10:18:57 AM
Previous Thread: https://www.avforums.co.za/index.php/topic,56369.0.html

I can assist with the importation of items from a wide range of international locations.

I exclusively use courier services so packages arrive faster and more reliably than normal post delivery and much cheaper than standard online store courier rates.

To your door anywhere in South Africa.

Payment can be done via cash deposit, EFT or credit card through PayPal.

Please contact for a quote on anything you may be interested in. Quotation includes purchase price, shipping and duties/VAT, only one payment required. No nasty customs suprises, guaranteed!

Want something unavailable in South Africa but:
•   Seller won't ship to SA?
•   Worried about the unreliability of standard post?
•   Concerned about the complexities of international shopping and shipping?
•   Don't have a credit card?

Right, new year, new thread with some changes!

1. For returning customers please note, I have ***NEW BANKING DETAILS***
2. I've moved up a "tier" on the international shipping so is now slightly cheaper.
3. I now have my own local courier account so local deliveries are cheaper as well.
4. I can now assist with return shipping so the supplier warranty applies. Please note return shipping is at customers cost.

I've passed these savings into my calcs, new prices are in effect immediately.

Hi, quick question. Do you do it the other way around as well? ie. shipping out of South Africa.
Currently using post office, but tracking is a nightmare. Obviously cost is low.

Hi hi

Yes I can now, however it's more expensive than bringing stuff in, and I won't be able to handle customs etc on the country of destination. But obviously a lot more reliable than the PO. Send me a PM and we can try make a plan.

Oh and thank you for confirming I am indeed subscribed to email alerts on this thread ;)

Could you perhaps post a mockup of a dummy order to show potential cost savings?

eg. buying a Schiit Freya preamp from Schiit

I'm uncomfortable putting numbers in the open, I get far too many "but you said the price was" messages as it is.

If you'd like a quote send me a PM and I'll be happy to do one for you.

I ordered a small component (actually a USB board) from a supplier in Holland, and despite me telling them not to, they sent it by post.  Now, 4 months later it has not arrived.  The Netherlands Post Office do not seem that much more jacked up than ours.  Their tracking service does not work, and when the supplier said he wished to submit a claim, they told him he must allow 12 months for delivery, they will not entertain a claim before that

The actual device is in a carton 180 x 120 x 20 and weighs 50 grammes.   I was going to ask them to replace it.  Can you give me a thumbsuck price for door to door please?  I am in Cape Town

The original shipping cost 26€

Scott I have locked/unstickyed the other thread and stickyed this one.

How would eBay orders work, do you order from your eBay account?

Do you know who is cheapest for Nitecore products, was a sale at Gearbest but now quite pricey, I have been trying to get a Nitecore D4 18650 charger in from eBay and they never arrive.

Yip, you tell me what you want as above, I'll give you a number and handle everything else. It'll then pitch up at your door entirely unsuprisingly as I update every step of the way.

PM incoming with the quote.

I would also be interested in something like eBay orders, and in addition whether one might be able to import from, for example, the UK or German Amazon sites?

In addition, what about German or UK VAT? Would it be possible to deduct it when ordering from those countries?

I can do from pretty much anywhere except South America, Russia and Australia, and anywhere there's a civil war going on or something.

I can help with all those "online traders" you mentioned. Technically this is advertising so I won't mention names myself ;)

VAT is applicable in country of origin as it's delivered to a local address.

Understood, but showing numbers would allow potential users of your service to know where they can save.
ie. like the shipping.

Schiit only offers USPS and Fexex up to $174. I understand you reckon you can save on shipping?
How much?

Please PM if not posting response.

Ah I see what you mean.

Ok using Schiit's cheapest option for the Freya is $120(R1620) my courier will be R1011

Thanks! I understand warranty-related issues will be for my account, but what happens if the item is damaged (or lost) in transit?

Ah I see what you mean.

Ok using Schiit's cheapest option for the Freya is $120(R1620) my courier will be R1011

Please confirm exact exchange rate used in the above calculation.  R 13.50?

Also be aware that with my example of the Freya, one can pay Schiit by either credit card or Paypal (3% levy).
Paypal will have the benefit of PayPal buyer protection and thus be preferred.

Can you allow for PayPal, not to pay but the protection? (obviously for a fee)

Perhaps rather quote a variable figure(min-max) to allow for +-5% variance?

All deliveries are 100% guaranteed against loss/damage. Full refund or re-order, whichever you prefer.

I just used 13.5. It's certainly not an exact amount or indicative in any way of current or future pricing. Just an extremely wide ranging ballpark as an example.

Please don't add R1011 to the price of a Freya and take that as the price ;)

Protection against what?

I have PayPal as a payment option, but the 3% applies and the double forex conversions take a toll, PayPal doesn't support the rand. It's really for people who have PayPal funds and want to use those.

Protection against what?

Like EBAY protection...

The seller only gets paid if you are happy and you have a certain time period to put in a claim. The claim gets checked by PayPal on a case by case basis.

If you are unhappy with the product and want to return it.
Got it but it is not as described.
Never got it, lol

Ah I see, doesn't really apply to my service:

"If you are unhappy with the product and want to return it." The customer supplies the links and chooses the products, if a link is not provided I ALWAYS link in the customer to what I'm ordering if I'm unsure about it. I can't be held responsible if the customer chooses the wrong thing. If it is wrong I will organise return shipping but it will be at customers cost.

"Got it but it is not as described." In this case I will naturally contact the vendor and get a replacement sent at their cost.

"Never got it." All orders are insured, I will refund or replace any lost or damaged goods in transit.

Hope that clears things up!

In the example of the Freya with $120 shipping and R 1011 courier. What is the expected order/transit/delivery time?

Delivery is in under 3 weeks for standard and 2 weeks for express. But again that R1011 is a ballpark figure and only part of the total, it is NOT a quote. PM me for a full quote on the Freya.

Hmm that's a good observation, the starting point was 3 S's stacked and he ran from that. I'll speak to the graphics designer and get a test with a flipped line and see.

What do you think?

As someone who deals with logos and branding daily please take heed that my comments are not meant to offend, just to point out what I see as the glaringly obvious.

I can see the 3 Esses & it ties in with your text/entity name. Nice.

I like fdlsys 3 arrows better than the original tapered lines which were opposing one another.

However - It looks like an amateur drew a Bitmap in MS Paint. One can clearly see where the straight line & curves meet - no curved lines, just jagged pixels. Looks very unprofessional.

If you want the number of the graphic artist we use drop me a PM. To redraw this logo properly & provide you with both vector .pdf for printing/branding & 3 different size .jpg images for email signature/web/forum etc. the cost would be in the region of R700 ex VAT & he'd give you the Pantones for printing purposes as well.

Also remember for branding purposes that shading is a PITA. Can only use solid colours for screen prints (unless you're prepared to shell out for a CMYK print), all pad prints, laser engraving & embroidery (those 4 being the most common & popular branding methods.

Digital print will do shades no problem - Digital transfer, dome stickers, vinyl stickers, Direct to product & heat press (anyone who still uses heat press should be shot in any case).

Sorry gents but the arrows are not going to happen. specifically banned the use of any arrows right from the start. Too cliche  for a transport company.

100's, I'm sure if I get to the point of making branded baseball caps the logo will have changed ;)

The only things I'm likely to print in the near/medium future will be business cards and flyers, even that's unlikely.

But to get back to serious business:

USD AVAILABLE

I have $780 available, only advertising this here on avforums as you guys are aware of how it works. First come first served, but combined with the stronger rand at the moment the costs may be quite a bit lower. Max single purchase I can do is $500 though.

I'm going to be away in the UK from 31 March to 17 April so responses, quotes etc may be a little delayed but I am planning to be online when I can.

All orders placed between 10-30 March will be subject to a day or two's delay as I have had to make alternative arrangements for local receiving and dispatch.

In case people get the wrong idea with that line - The first time i ordered the parts I specified the wrong ones, not that the incorrect ones were delivered.

Thanks again!

Haha, thanks for that! Could have come across a bit dodge.

Just a reminder that orders placed after Friday(10th) will be subject to a 1 or 2 day delay while I'm in the UK.

Being in the UK does give me the opportunity to do something a bit special but more details soon!

I've had a quote form request from a Fred Coetzer for a PCB however the supplied email address was incorrect freo@telkomsa.net

Anyone on here? Thought it was my best bet!

Well.... I *did* say it exists, did not say it was the right person  :point:

I did a quick check on telkomsa.net emails beginning with f, could not find anything remotely close to the email above, so most probably not a forum member.

Special Offer

FREE International Shipping from the UK

Yes, you read right. No, I haven't gone mad.

I'll be in the UK from the 31st of March to the 17th of April, this affords me the opportunity to bring orders back for customers as well, there are however some quite strict terms.

1. Offer is only valid for items from the UK or EU that can be delivered to Swindon UK before the 16th of April.
I won't be able to handle UK customs charges so all items need to be from the EU and obviously arrive before I leave.

2. VAT and duties will still apply
Before anyone gets excited, yes I will go stand in a queue to pay our government money. I'm an importer, not a smuggler. NON NEGOTIABLE

3. No large items
The orders will be delivered to my grandparents home so I can't have bulky items. So no monitors, PC cases, amplifiers etc

4. No LAGS
Air travel regulations mean I can't bring back anything that's a liquid or paste.

5. This offer is only available to forum members via PM
As a thank you to the various forums I will only be offering this to members who initially contact for a quote via PM.

6. I reserve the right to end this offer at any time
There's a limited amount of extra baggage I can book, once it's full, it's full.

Now all the rules are out the way, the good stuff:

Big orders, little orders, all are welcome, hit me up!
Not only will you get free shipping with this, I've tightened my margins to the bare minimum so some great deals are out there.
All orders are as usual guaranteed against loss/damage. Full refund or re-order in the unlikely event something happens.
Local delivery will be the week of the 17th of April.

Gents and gentesses, the suitcases are filling up, there is VERY VERY limited space still available for orders. Surely someone needs valves or stylii or something, would be perfect to bring back.

My normal service is still running full steam ahead though!

Swindon!  I would ask for a decent pint from the Beehive or the Gluepot.  Don't think they'd make it back intact.  If you need valves (new rather than NOS), the guitar shop on Farringdon Rd has a reasonable selection of types (Electroharmonix IIRC), as does the guitar shop on Commercial Rd (just up from the empty so possibly being removed covered market).  Worth having a look in the Cash Converters on Commercial Rd as well - they had a pair of Technics SL1200s when I was there in January.  Oh, and there is still a hifi shop on Farringdon Rd which may have some things of interest to you (eg. a cartridge, headphones or small items).

And if you want to see a sorry excuse for a football team, they play at County Ground every other Saturday.  Still my team though.

Too late she cried!

Sorry all I'm going to have to bring the special to a close, I really am now out of space. Quotes I've sent out today are eligible if we can finalise things and get a payment done tomorrow.

Anything small(physical size), and I mean really small, that is of high value to fill in the cracks may also be considered but at my discretion only. Diamonds anyone? Kidding...

Quotations and new orders will be processed when I am online so please feel free to send them through.

Thanks Martin, all back online now that I've returned to sunny SA. Could mods just check though please, my phone is still being banned...

All UK orders have been processed. They've either been shipped, will be shipped or you'll have an update why they haven't shipped(HINT: the packaging is on the other side of the planet)

Pleased to announce that normal service has been resumed so expect replies within hours(possibly minutes) again. Big plans are afoot to improve and expand on the service but those will come in the next few weeks.

Happy shopping!

Quick update time, site is nearly up and running! They're just busy with the SSL at the moment then will port across from the dev server and go live, no firm ETA yet though.

Otherwise all is going well, I can't(and won't) guarantee it but my average delivery time has dropped to 13-15 days so the new system is working well. Just a reminder again that we can now accept credit cards through PayFast!

Now chop chop, get to ordering :)

Okay we're A for Away! All the little niggles sorted and site is officially live. Very proud of the devs, thanks Kim and Tim for putting up with me and producing a great site, members please feel free to PM me and I'll get you their contact details.

The most impressive part is the innocuous "Quick Estimate" page:

https://www.scottshipping.co.za/quick-estimate/

Simply put in the purchase price of the product you're looking for, it's local shipping cost in the country of origin(if applicable), select the item type and it's weight and hey presto you'll get a final number for using my service.

This is calculated at the current live exchange rates and includes all duties etc payable, and yes it is accurate. Cool hey? No need to wait for a quote, all right there and instant! If the total is in your ballpark you'll be given an option to forward me the details to confirm the estimate and job done!

Standalone batteries are still only available out of the US unfortunately. I can get packages out, rates are a lot more than bringing stuff in though. Need to push numbers and gain a bit more leverage before I can negotiate those fees.

Morning Morning

Welcome to the 4 day week, my stuff of nightmares, nothing like giving a courier company a day off to throw everything into chaos. They don't seem to realise that cargo planes land irregardless... Anyway aren't you all lucky that I get to deal with this instead of you :)

Nothing too exciting on your side of things to report but much work in the background going on.

Remember our Facebook page here (https://www.facebook.com/scottshipping/), ratings, likes and shares are most welcome! Our website is here (https://www.scottshipping.co.za/) for a breakdown of the service and the wildly abused "Quick Estimate" functionality.

Cheers

Website update time! We now have a blog, mainly to improve SEO on the site as apparently it's "code heavy and complex" and needing more content.

Will try and keep the articles as interesting as possible though, you can find the page here:

Have you had any response from MyBroadband?  See your name popping up all over the place.   MyBB seems to consist of very helpful people, self-righteous twits and people with entrenched attitudes.  I went to their conference in 2013 and it was most interesting

We're temporarily unavailable on the landline number, you can still call on my cell number listed on the website.

Busy with a move and our landline provider(no names, don't want to get sued, but I'll give you one guess) has helpfully transferred the line 5 days early, new number will be listed as soon as it's installed.

Thank you Scott for my two imports from the USA and the UK, which came as promised on/before the times you committed to.

Not only did you bid on the two items, you sorted the whole shebang from beginning to end and all I did was pay you an eft in Rands. What a pleasure dealing with you.

Highly recommended!

Right, Black Friday is approaching so we're likely to be inundated... I'd therefore like to ask all members a favour, please please please use the "Quick Estimate" to generate a quote rather than emailing in. This form is accurate, it pulls from the same back end as our quotes, if the data input is correct the total will be the same.

Link: https://www.scottshipping.co.za/quick-estimate/ (https://www.scottshipping.co.za/quick-estimate/)

Some tips on the fields:

Purchase Price:
Please check if there's sales tax applied, this is especially common for items sourced in the EU, sometimes this is only added at the final step of check-out

Shipping Cost (country of origin):
This is the field most entered wrongly, it's simply the cost of local delivery in the country of origin. So if the item is sourced in the US it'll be delivery to New York, in the UK it'll be delivery to London etc.

Currency:
Only the currencies listed are supported on the quick estimate, if you leave dollars selected and put a ¥ in the text field the estimate will just fail.

Item Category:
This determines duty percentage, so using the wrong one will mess up the final number. Please note that "Other" is no guarantee that the item will not have duties applied, it's just impossible to add every item to the site.

Weight (in kg):
Remember to use the shipping weight and not the item weight, a laptop is not 1.2kg to ship :)

If the total is acceptable you can submit directly from this page to us, we'll confirm and take it from there. This should ensure that the responses are as quick and accurate as possible.

For time limited specials payment via instant EFT or cards will be required. We can't accept responsibility for an item selling out, you will of course be refunded in full if that happens.

Right next up, the time we've all been dreading, Xmas shopping!!!!! Now as men I know this goes against our rules of existence but if you want goodies through us you've gotta plan ahead.

Orders placed on or before 1 Dec will be delivered before Christmas
Orders placed on or before 8 Dec in the US/UK/EU will be delivered before Xmas, from China etc it's touch and go as it takes a while for orders from there to be delivered to my couriers.
Orders placed after 8 Dec will likely not be delivered before the big day.

As always delivery times are an estimate, things can and do go wrong, if they do we'll supply an IOU card to present to the unlucky recipient :)

We will be CLOSED from the 22nd to the 26th(TBC), no quotes, updates or orders will be processed. The rest of the time will be business as usual, delivery times will be slightly extended though due to holidays and general slowness of everything in Dec.

I can help with all those "online traders" you mentioned. Technically this is advertising so I won't mention names myself ;)

VAT is applicable in country of origin as it's delivered to a local address.

SARS being SARS they've only released the updated tariff sheets today... This is regarding the 2% increase in excise duties.

Popular items on our service affected:

Telephone sets, including telephones for cellular networks
Audio amplifiers
CD/tape players
Digital cameras and video camera recorders
Almost all AV items, this includes TV boxes
Monitors/TV's/Projectors
Radios

And then finally the new tariff description:

Machines for the reception, conversion and transmission or regeneration of voice, images or other data, including switching and routing apparatus:
Apparatus designed for use when carried in the hand or on the person

As I suspected this was included to catch tablets, these will now be subject to excise duties unfortunately.

We've been pricing these in for the last week or so, however if all this worries you don't panic, we'll sort everything on your behalf! One price, one payment, one delivery :)

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Other items we can't/don't usually do but wonder why they got more expensive:

Perfumes and toilet waters
Fireworks
clothing accessories and other articles of fur skin
Air conditioning machines
Single loudspeakers, mounted in their enclosures
Multiple loudspeakers, mounted in the same enclosure
Motorbikes exceeding 800cm3 engine
Jet ski's
Guns and accessories

Please note this is not an exhaustive list and we don't take any responsibility for this info, use at own risk!

From time to time, in addition to the monthly blog posts, I'll be personally writing another piece that should give a bit more insight into how we run things.

The first one is a biggie and our most frequent request by a long shot... Price breakdowns on our quotes:

"Exciting" news I haven't shared, we've just past another year of operation so I took a look at our calculations, apparently I do that.

Have been able to tighten up the buffers put in place against exchange rate fluctuations as well as pass on our decreased insurance premium, orders should now be slightly cheaper! It's not a massive saving but thought I would pass it on anyway.

Quick Estimate (http://"https://www.scottshipping.co.za/quick-estimate/") on the site hasn't been updated yet, need to see how this works first, after getting a ballpark with that you can just submit if you're interested.

It's Prime Day!!!!

Starting at 9pm tonight SA time, although the amazon devices(Echo, Fire TV etc etc) are already live.

amazon Prime Day (https://www.amazon.com/b?node=13887280011&ref=PD18_LU_GW_Hero_DT&pf_rd_p=9dd8508b-8b06-436b-a387-ad87ca9808ac&pf_rd_r=EVTH4VHZKFKXY7JYHTSY)

Products with limited stock or time on special cannot be ordered unfortunately, quoting/invoicing/payment takes too long, however most items will be available.
Immediate EFT or credit card payment will be required to take advantage of the specials.
All quotes requested this evening will be replied to tomorrow morning, we'll get back to you asap.

Happy shopping!

EDIT: rather use the website than PM's, we'll be able to get back to you sooner: https://www.scottshipping.co.za/quick-estimate/

HYPE! HYPE! HYPE!!!!!!!!!!!!!1!!!!one!!!!!!

Cos uncle Jeff needs more of your money!

As an interesting side note, 19 months after I started using my current bank card at every e-tailer on the planet(that's correct, we double checked) it finally got cloned somewhere. Got a strange transaction for R1.93 last night followed by 2 requests for an OTP for EUR2112! Luckily they were stupid and attempted to use the card at a secure retailer because that would've hurt!

Always knew this day was coming so services will not be impacted, happy shopping!

EDIT: link is to Linus Tech Tips showcasing a few deals, this forum doesn't allow video embedding apparently.

So... What would you all like the next blog post to be about? My 2 ideas are our security and privacy around your contact details etc or an unacceptable items list but hit me up with any other suggestions!

Hoping to get it up Monday.

Our VAT registration will be effective from the 1st of September so there's going to be a big website update over the course of this week.

Shouldn't break anything but the site may behave a bit weirdly so just a heads up!
Title: Re: Imports: Scott's Shipping Services

Quick note, due to our impending VAT registration all quotes and unpaid invoices will become invalid as of September 1st.

Items and shipments already in progress are NOT affected.

We will however happily re-quote for any items you may need!

Hi all!

New pricing for exports and local shipping is up on the website, this will be effective as of Sep 1st. Prices have gone up a bit unfortunately, which is why we delayed the VAT registration as long as possible.

Quick Estimate should be updated by middle of next week, it's a bit more involved on the back end to do.

All quotes and invoices issued today will expire at close of business.

VAT registration kicks in tomorrow so our invoicing and pricing structure will change.

All order currently in progress are NOT affected and this change will not adversely affect the client experience.

SME's rejoice! We will now be providing tax invoices for all transactions so you can claim back some of that delicious input VAT.

For the regular Joe's out there don't stress, prices have NOT gone up by 15%.

There's been a slight increase in local and export rates but that's just the yearly increase that kicked in end of June, we've been absorbing it till now.

So this months blog post is going to be an SEO/Blog one rather than an FAQ.

Need to drive some traffic and counter the effectively negative SEO I posted last month :) You have no idea how many people google "import the thing that we can't ship", fail to notice the article it links to says NO and ask for a quote....

Any particular suggestions on what I should blather on about? You can see the style of articles needed in the blog section, apologies for the formatting, that's still being figured out.
